Stop staring at my mandibles.
I too am a monument to all of your sins. I even did it on Legendary first, and so when I finished that last level, I really made it rain with gamerscore for all the achievements it unlocked! I wasn't sure I'd want to play the campaign a second time all that soon after finishing it, so I just took the Legendary plunge from the start.
For your Legendary guide: Just be patient and don't be discouraged about how many times you have to go through a stage. And sometimes, just avoiding enemies and getting to the objective can be the way to go. With the one jammer guarded by four Hunters.. there was enough cover that with Sprint I could hit the control and get out. On the spire, skyjacking a banshee let me fly up and over all those baddies on the ground.
I also preferred to deal with grunts and jackals first before Elites, dispatching them with the DMR from a distance. Same with the Brutes, since you can pop their helmets off, and then the skulls. Otherwise you'd lose track of them while dancing with the Elites, they'd come around, and light you up. And as noted, those little plasma pistols pack quite a punch on Legendary. But then it was noob combo and headshots all the way for the Elites.
The downside was sometimes I'd get clipped by the Elites, and I'd end up clearing out the same waves of grunts and jackals multiple times, since the game was mercilessly stingy with checkpoints in places.
Oh, and about the checkpoints: not just stingy at places, but also some poor timing. When I was in the top of the spire, having an Ultra Elite running at me with sword drawn was perhaps not the best time for a checkpoint. At least I didn't live very long when I attempted something that didn't work, so I could find something that did get me out of this quickly!
But there's my 2cR for your Legendary guide.
