When I first picked up Halo 3 back in 2007, I couldn't get enough. Literally... I played over 3000 ranked games.
I lost interest in reach only a few weeks after launch. (so did my friends)

Comparing Halo 3 and Reach's ranked matchmaking:

Halo 3- your true skill level is shown to everyone
Reach- Your true skill level is calculated behind the scenes and a fake temporary rating is shown.

Halo 3- Your skill level was permanent
Reach- Your skill level lasts less than 20 days

Halo 3- Rank required both a minimum number of games and skill
Reach- Rank only shows how many games you have played

Halo 3- Every new level felt like an accomplishment
Reach- Every new rating feels meaningless

Halo 3- Was easy to meet people of similar skill who you could level up with
Reach- There is no leveling up and no benefit for you to play with someone else since winning hardly means anything

Halo 3- Your teammates were your allies and the other team was your enemy.
Reach- Both your teammates and the other team are your enemy.

Halo 3- Teamwork was key and everyone cared about each others performance and wanted to help you get better
Reach- People are only concerned with their own performance. Helping you get better actually hurts them.

For those of you who are confused, the trueskill system is still in full effect in Reach--it's just behind the scenes. The difference being that a win in Halo 3 meant your team won the match, while a win in reach means your rating for that match was in the top 50%. Top 4 in slayer--top 2 in doubles.

Example of end match result:

You and your friend bob win a match of team doubles

Good foe larry- 1600
Ur Friend bob- 1488
You- 1487
Bad foe scott- 1100

According the new true skill system, your foe larry and your friend bob won the game, while you lost because your score was not in the top 50%. Therefore, bob is your enemy.

People say that Halo 3's system was bad because of all the boosters and second accounts. However, all they had to do to stop this issue was to prevent free trial accounts from being able to play ranked games or make it so that quitting a game does not lower your sigma.

"I'll tell you right now, if you ever see someone called ll wa1do ll... leave the game immediately. My friend knows him, I've been in his party a few times, do not mess with this guy. From what I've heard, he's the real deal. I also heard someone made a guy named Wa2do (similar to his name) and then he hacked that guy and boosted off his level." -From Minou on Bungie.net

You need to win a SET amount of games to level up, getting a 50 is impossible without circling, there aren't any "second accounters" or "boosters", no exp just your level 1-50.

Halo Reach. Arena is the most accurate at determining skill by far.

Reach, because you have to keep earning your rank unlike Halo 3 where you can just getting a fifty, stop playing, and it will stay that way forever. Also, this thread sounds a little bit biased.

You have not even played a single game in the arena...

I can see why lyle would think Reach has a more accurate skill system considering he was a brigadier grade 4 in Halo 3. The type of guy who could get a lv 50 on a 2nd account in 1 day over and over again, yet no matter how hard he tries will never get it on his main. I know someone else who had this same issue (points to self).

However, I find that the arena gives me no incentive to play. I wish I could enjoy reach as much as lyle.

I play games for gameplay, not silly gimmicks

H3 MM warrior

Reach S7, 8 and 9 arena warrior.

H4 MM legend

My main in H3 is a 50, I have personally had about 5 other accounts that were 50s, with a total of 5 playlist 50s. I have also helped well over 50 people get 50s, yes they were boosted, no I dont care. Reaches system gives me no incentive to play. In H3 i could play on my 50 against the best the playlist had to offer and that for me was fun, as well as trying to get to a 50 as fast as I possibly could, 17 games btw. In Reach I play 4 games win 3 and feel like nothing happened. The maps are very unbalanced and not at all fun. Set ups are frustratingly difficult to keep due to ineffective weapons, as well as I do not yet know all spawn times/points. Overall Reach to me feels like a never ending game of social slayer, and that is not how I have fun with these types of games. Not that there is anything wrong with playing socially, but I prefer more competitive type gaming.

Why not stop by my File Share while you're here?

~Long Live Halo 2
Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

Halo 2, no contest.

I say H2 but reach is right behind. 1% onyx means some serious skill. Seeing a 50 in Halo 3 meant absolutely nothing. You have to search their stats and game history if you wanted to see if the person was actually good.

1% Onyx means nothing. Notice how the people that got it are the people that played the most. Once I got Onyx I stopped playing it really wasnt worth it. If I wanted to put 200 games into 1 playlist just for that I could easily do it

I loved Halo 3's ranking system. I enjoy winning and working together. In reach the ranking system sucks. I dislike rating alot, I love having skill and going up each level and everyone seeing my skill. In reach no one cares about rating, there's mostly no teamwork since your motivation isnt winning or losing only getting credits. I also feel reach is much more slow paced then halo 3.

Never played Halo 2(other than 3 games on another account), but Halo 3 is way better than Reach. Winning means nothing at all in Reach, plus it seems old already.

I've had so many awesome times in ranked playlists in Halo 3 even though I was terrible, now it's just a matter of how much my teammates can steal my kills.

  • 10.11.2010 8:10 AM PDT

Halo 2 gave you the opportunity to take calculated risks with your levels. You always knew how close you were to going up or down.

Also, nothing could ever be as aesthetically pleasing as the levels 37-39. I feel that is also important to note.

This list is definitely biased on some points. With the exception of campaign, I met a very, VERY small minority in Halo 3 who "cared about my performance."

Also, just because you're in competition with someone, that doesn't make them your enemy. Furthermore, Rank isn't the only reason to play a game- have we considered that one?

So you go -20 in team doubles and you think your partner wouldnt care that you lost him the game because of your performance, of course people care about your performance its a team based game! Everything he said about reach being lonewolve is fact! That is why your team mate is your enemy because the better they do the more it ranks you down! and no rank is not the only reason to play a game but as halo is the only game i play for rank as i believe it was (not in reach) the only game with a fairly accurate ranking system as well as being amazing!
