I remember the days when i was younger, playing marathon, happily blasting away at phor, and i even had the storyline memorized. Nowadays, however, i can hardly even find mention of the classic shooters that made bungie's shooter reputation. Almost no body knows it, but Halo has much thanking to do to the marathon series. Some of its best concepts were taken from it. Anyway, please post your opinions on this subject.
Thanks,
Yout3

I downloaded it recently, but I haven't really played it, I can't say that I played it as a kid though.

bah

See what happens when you un-sticky a Rip-Saw post? People start asking me where the post is, they start posting about the topic again, the whole tihng generally goes south. You see yout3, there were so many good Marathon topics that the mods couldn't let them all be stickied, so stosh made this post to sum up the good ones.

I do - on the odd occasion.

But I am waiting until mobile phones become powerful enough to support aleph one - then the revival will be huge! :P

I read this post about 15 minutes ago then clicked ripsaw's link, then stosh's link to ripsaw's tutorial, then downloaded marathon and it works.

But I seem to have figgured out most of the controls except for the walk foward one. At least thats the only one I noticed im missing. Anywho can someone please tell me the basic controls?

I've always heard of Marathon, but never really checked it out. But I'll download them. They're such small files... Are they the full versions?

  • 08.13.2004 12:13 AM PDT

Yep. Marathon is the best.

You can expect small(ish) files - the game did come out nearly 10 years ago.

I downloaded off of bungie somewhere and I have only played it 1..or 2 times! It's pretty cool. But HALO is the all time ruler!

switch weapon-7 or 9 (kp)
fire weapon- space

That would have to be M1A1. Sorry, but I don’t think the original works under native OSX :-( It should work under OS9, though.

Oh, and to answer your question, yes, I still play marathon. Well, Aleph One anyway. (Hi res textures! w00t!)

Remember, Infinity is the best, regardless of whether or not you understand it.

..... and that ladies and gentlemen is what we refer to as either a REALLY big fan of the KKV-7 10mm Flechette SMG (which did not exist in Marathon 2) or, somone who is really good at expressing their opinion as fact. *grin*

Yup, I loves me some underwater shootin'!

I really was the astounding level design that sold me on it, though. The last couple levels were possibly some of the darkest and most foreboding I've yet experienced, and I've beaten Doom3. It was just too cool for words.

But yes, I thought M2's story was a bit better.

Grab the osx AlephOne and the following of fileball.net and you will have M1A1 goodness for OSX!
http://fileball.net/marathon/item.fb?451353496

Marathon 2 and Infinity did not have installers, you simply copy the game folder off the CD and onto your HD.

EDIT - Opps, should have looked at hangbrain's post more carefully I suppose :)
