Subject: The Mental State of a Clone

I’ve noticed, as I’m sure many of you have, that cloning/copying seems to be a prevalent flavor in the Halo universe. Whether it’s an AI being copied, or a Human being cloned, the issue is revisited on multiple occasions. I had an interesting thought resurface the other day concerning this. Does a clone know it’s a clone? Does a copied AI know it’s a copy, and not the original? Sure, there is a simple “no" resounding through you mind, but is that the correct answer? Is there a universal answer to this question? I’m interested in hearing you guys thoughts on this!

Twelve Large ²

An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.

A two letter word imediately comes to mind. And that word is No. Unless you were told, how would you know that you were a copy of yourself?

Simple check for scars, birth marks, or any distiguishing feature that wasn't caused genetically but by your natural surroundings. Just wondering if you got this idea from looking at ilovebees if so yes.

No, this idea came from something else. I really just want to see if there is an argument that a clone would know if it was a clone. I'm thinking about the Covenant AI. Right before Cortana "erases" it, this is said, " I go to finally to my heaven reward paradise final-finalfinalinfinityinfinityinfini - AT NONCOPYSTATE".

It appears as the Covenant AI is implying that it's a copy of another AI;)

I don't know how interested you are in Marathon Links Eagle, but
the Covenant are similar to the Pfhor, not in appearance, but how
they operate. Tycho was copied a lot by the Pfhor because I'm
fairly sure they didn't know how to build A.I. (again, similar to the
Covenant) What I'm implying is that theme of "cloning" you see
in Halo and Marathon is hinting to their "link." IF the two
games are linked by an actual story thread.

EDIT: I just realized I posted and got way OT. No, I don't think
a clone would know it was a clone unless it was proven to be
so, or if the clone was somehow "programmed" with that
knowledge. It's like when you're born, you don't know where
you came from. Same thing with a clone I think.

hm... if you talking about without being told... if a clone will have the memories and/or of the original then if they have flashbacks or random remembering of the original's past they may put two and two together but i dunno... clones may not have the original's memory/knowledge.. im not into neural biology or physics or whatever ology that would fit into... i guess neurology

Just so the record is straight, I also believe that a clone wouldn't know that it was a clone, unless it was told otherwise. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't alone in that thought, because one of my next theories might deal with this subject:)

The AIs in the Halo universe are aware of themselves.

From what I understand (and I haven't read the books, so take this with a giant grain of salt), some AIs, like Cortana, are self-aware while others, simple ship AIs, are not or are barely self-aware.
