RIP Halo 2: November 9, 2004-May 10, 2010
I was the 2nd to last person to get kicked off Halo 2, see the thread Here

It's has been confirmed, here is the trailer for Halo: Anniversary!
Also, Here is a more in-depth look at Halo: Anniversary.

Halo Anniversary will be released on November 15, 2011. It will be XBL compatible, and you will be able to play online cooperative campaign. Multiplayer maps will be also be built into the disk, but it doesn't look like you will be able to play competitively online (LAN parties are better anyways!) The graphics will be enhanced (They look amazing, actually), but you will easily be able to toggle back to the original graphics. Oh, and there will be Firefight!

Not only have the graphics been remastered, so has the audio! All of the audio... here is a quote from a Halo Waypoint article:
"everything has been remastered sound effects beefed up and remixed, but more importantly, we took Marty O'Donnell's industry-changing soundtrack and gave it some deep, smoove loving, with a re-orchestration and brand new recording with the Skywalker Orchestra. So the perfect melodies, the movements and the themes are intact, but just glowingly more rich and lavish (and expensive). Anyone who's heard the similar project with Halo Legends will know sort of what to expect, but expect it to be better."

For all those who feared that the game would be changed to much, there is no longer anything to fear. It seems the game has been left pretty much untouched, besides the graphics. Also, there will be terminals hidden, just like in Halo 3, that may give us more secret clues about the Halo universe.

So what do you guys, veterans and newer players, think of Halo: Anniversary? To the newer Halo fans, I'm glad you'll be able to experience one of the greatest and most historical games of all time. Though, it won't be the same now, and it probably won't be as appreciated as it should be. Veterans, we know what is was like back then. Halo: Anniversary is a great thing, but there are definitely some down sides that I won't get into. Let's just hope everyone understands that the original Halo: CE cannot be replaced by a fancier version.

Everything below is old news, I decided to keep it just to archive the past months, it was a lot of anticipation trying to figure out if Halo: Anniversary was real or not.
Link
343 Industries (The current owner of the Halo IP, NOT Bungie.) may be using Halo Reach's graphics engine to remake Halo CE, and possibly Halo 2. (It didn't say anything about Halo 2, but it's just a logical guess of mine.)

So what do you guys, veterans and newer players, think of this? I'm not really sure if I like this or not, Halo CE is a perfect game without good graphics, I'm not sure if would ever be the same.

Update: Well guys, rumors are only rumors, sadly. 343 Industries does not have any plans to remake Halo CE at this time. Here is more information: Link
343 Industries did say that it's a good idea, so maybe we'll see a Halo CE remake sometime in the future.

Update 2: Since this thread came back alive somehow, I'll update you with CVG's article that says "according to "industry chatter" reported in the new Games Master magazine, which writes that the updated game could run on the Halo: Reach engine and arrive ahead of a full Halo 3 sequel in late 2012. If true, the remade Halo: Combat Evolved could release on the original's tenth anniversary, which falls on November, 2011." Read the article for more information, and I'll keep this thread updated as I get more information. (As long as the thread doesn't die in the mean time.)

Update 3: Halo CE remake confirmed! According to Joystiq, the Halo CE remake will be released this holiday season! November 15, 2011 to be exact.
"The game is expected to support 1080p resolution and 3D televisions. Details on multiplayer are supposedly still being worked out, but we understand the remake will likely feature online co-op (the original game supported two-player split-screen co-op)."
Thanks to hadlermaster for posting the article in this thread.

Update 4: Halo HD to be shown at E3 2011! Read for yourself, and use your best judgement. Though, it is unknown (and probably unlikely) if there will be multiplayer or not, there is now more evidence of a Halo CE remake. This E3 should be a good one, let's wait and see what happens.

If this should ever happen, I just hope they don't change too much about enemy aesthetics.

I want to fight solid gold combat armor wearing Zealots, not horned Generals.

I also want Zealots to always aggressively charge at me. In Halo CE, they would come towards you, but they weren't really charging (they were just trying to meet their set criteria of preferred combat distance range, which led them into berserking range), which made it less realistic.

And most importantly, I don't want it to be too easy to assassinate Elites. In Halo 3, Brutes could easily be assassinated, even War Chieftains. In Halo CE, the Elite's melee range was high, which made it hard to assassinate them since the force of their melee would push you away.

If Bungie had made their melee range lower, even Zealots could be easy to assassinate.

I would love to see Halo CE remade in HD. I just made a profile on here today to say the exact same thing. Most of my friends don't have HALO CE, or 2 (luckily i do) but they have a 360. I imagine a lot, if not most people are like this. If bungie remade Halo 1 and 2 every one would be able to relive Halo, or see how the story started. Also, how great would Halo ce be with all the new weapons, and armor upgrades. Halo 2 was awsome, but how much more awsome would it be with Halo Reach's graphics?

Thanks so much for posting.

"You are the last of your kind: bred for combat, built for war. You're the master of any weapon, pilot of any vehicle, and fear no enemy"

I hope this is true.

Something to hold us over and coming out somewhere along the lines of 6 months!

This would be pretty pimp.

If it is legit, it is gonna be big. If I had it my way, I would want everything but the graphics to remain the same. Weapons would remain the same, maps would be the same, etc. I would also see about incorporating a playlist in Reach called "Halo CE" in which you could play with those playing Halo CE HD matchmaking. If they could integrate that, it would be awesome. Also, they should include the original game on the disc, for those who want the true Halo experience.

Please Bungie, redeem yourself w/ Reach.
Halo 2 and 3 both stink out loud.
In the immortal words of Mr Horse: Halo 2? No sir, didn't like it.

Not going to get my hopes up yet again. But....

if this happens all I'd like to see is:

- XBL support including Reach's very good netcode
- A map maker (even if PC based)
- The original physics emulated somehow (grenades felt so good to throw)
- And NO changes to gameplay, maps, etc except for uplift in looks.

I'd pay a LOT for this since it would be the only game I'd ever play on the xbox.

Kill the demon!

I really hope that Halo CE is not remade. It is great as it is even with bad graphics. I think the Halo series is a good example of how video games have developed over the past ten years. You can see what the graphics were like, how the game worked with simple code, and how a story line has been carried out over the years.

If Halo CE was remade, you would no longer see any of the old copies floating around anymore and would not be able to experience the most advanced video game from years past (If you no longer had a copy). Along with this, the story of the game might be changed in a weird way that wouldn't make it appealing anymore.

All in all, I think the Halo series is just fine as it is.

you forgot medals. I think the only thing missing in halo CE was the multiplayer medals. every other halo since then has had them, so why not put them in?

Pronounced "Nay-uss"

All I'd want is XBL support. That's all.

Change nothing to do with gameplay or aesthetics.

If a graphical update is applied, I wouldn't mind higher res replacements of the originals textures, but ONLY of the original textures.

R.I.P. Halo 2

I would love this to happen, but I don't want them to do it with the Reach game engine. I would want them to modify the games' current engines.

Redoing it with the Reach engine is going to change the feel of the game a lot. And quite honestly, I don't really like the Reach graphics engine. I hate the motion blur and the film grain. I feel like I just woke up after sleeping with my contacts still in (for those of you without contacts, your vision is really foggy after waking up). The motion blur is poorly done and just causes and unclear picture and the film grain serves no purpose at all. It too just ruins the clarity.

I hope they remake it. Combat Evolved is, by far, my favorite story wise. I would love to see some of the side story, perhaps, like the ones mentioned in the books. It would not only be amazing to see it in new graphic form, but also show some cool new things about the universe. I would love to see a halo, reach style flood in the swamp. The potential for re-creating the danger of the flood is outstanding.

Never give up, never surrender!

If this is true, and if 343 Industries can pull this off, I would be more confident going forward in their ability to make a good Halo game in the future.

I mean, by remaking the original (and possibly Halo 2) they will see clearly how to make a competent and successful game.

Grenades are like RAM, you can never have too much

sorry to rain on everyone's parade but,
if its going to use the reach engine, it will be crap. thats just a fact
microsoft always finds a way to ruin it
if its planned by 2011 its going to be quite rushed.
its going to be done by an internal team by microsoft, and we all know how well halo 2 vista did.
its going to be xbox exclusive, because its microshaft (cue xbox fanboys saying the superior PC version was somehow flawed)
every single remade map will be horribly edited visualy and gameplay wise, look at most of the remakes in the recent halo games
if it uses the reach engine, the graphics are going to be so flawed it wont be worth buying (graphics dont sell a game, but when its a graphic remaster that will probably sell at full retail price, they do)

and of course, if microsoft released the damned source code to halo 1, we would have the best halo game ever made to date

if you feel you must angrily reply to this, please counter the above points first, thank you

Ummmkay... how can you state these as if they are known fact? Haha, how about you wait for real information coming from the creators before you assume the worst? Unless of course you are just a pessimistic person in general. Not much you can change there if that's the case...

okay,
IF the game is released:
IF its going to use the reach engine it will be crap
IF its going to be made, microsoft will stick its fingers in it
IF they plan to release it by 2011, it will be rushed, look at how rushed halo 2 and reach was, they had 3 years working on halo 2 and 5 on reach, both were killed by deadlines
microsoft WILL release it 360 exclusive if its done by them, to sell their garbage consoles
90% of the remakes of the maps were screwed up, in one way or another
the reach engine is crap. and i mean pure 100% all natural horse dung
bungie cant optimize for crap, what makes you think 343 will

people who know what they are doing, and that do it for fame, not for money would do a better job than micro$oft.
if they released the source code a better game would be made

HAPPY NOW?

  • 10.19.2010 12:24 PM PDT

Bah, Humbug.

I will cream my pants if they don't change too much of it.

  • 10.19.2010 12:36 PM PDT

They better not change a damn thing, Halo is Halo, new graphics (and online) would be nice, but this is not time to make "other improvments"

  • 10.19.2010 4:14 PM PDT

I like Call of Duty and Gears of War, AND Halo. Why must everyone else like only one or the other?

I would love it if Halo: CE and Halo 2 got remade for the 360. Don't change their game engines, just update the graphics, add in Live support, Live campaign co-op, and achievements.

  • 10.19.2010 5:00 PM PDT

I definatly agree that would be just awesome I have been wanting that for soooo long

If/then statements are factual statements. Again, you have nothing to base these facts on. You haven't seen anything remade. You also don't know how long 343 may have been working on this project. Who knows, maybe they've been toying around with the project since they created Waypoint. Settle down, wait for any legit information, and then you can claim facts.

I would love this.
Just read about the rumor and changed my underwear because man....this would be epic.

My only concern is the gampeplay? I really don't think they should change that (too much). Halo CE's gameplay was great, not perfect, but close to it. I don't need AA's and all in that game. On the other hand....The Library....again? That level could and really should get a make over in a positive way.

As far as aestetics are concerned, I for ones DO hope they will upgrade at least all character models to fit Halo: Reach. Halo CE Jackals looked cool back then, but the new Jackals (H2 ->) are better. Same goes for Grunts, the variety in Reach was a lot more fun. Elites...well same really.

They definatly DO need to keep Brutes, Drones and Skirmishers out of the game. No need for them. Engineers...well, technically they already were in Halo CE's code...so I do think we should give them benefit of the doubt.

Maybe do add some wildlife to the Halo?

And of course: full Xbox Life support is a must. Just the classic maps, but online. And online co-op for campaign.

Oh, and before I stop. This just crossed my mind. Every Halo since H3 has had a side story (Terminals, Sadie's Story and Datapads). Now, I do think there is a possibility for a similar thing in a remake, but more interactive. Remember the book The Flood? Remember the Elite 'Zazamee and Grunt Yayap being a team of headhunters chasing down the Chief?
Maybe actually add them? Not in a story you can read, not in a story told in cutscenes (well perhaps they can)....but just a returning thing.
They DID encounter Chief in The Silent Carthographer (the room where you open the door to the Cartographer, they send the invisible Elites after you) and you kill the Elite supposedly being Zazamee in the elevator before going up to the Warthog Run...but maybe make them slightly more involved in the story.

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

If they do remake it, I hope they will keep everything the same besides the graphics. I also hope they won't charge full price for a game I already have...
