Microsoft is interested in manipulating behavior to gear it to buying new things. This means killing old games online and forcing the consumer to buy new things to be able to play online.
Windows XP is still in use a lot today, and MS supported 2k until 2k10.
They should instead forester loyalty and creating good products. If their products were really a big enough leap in quality than loyal fans would buy, that takes time to develop (games of quality).
They do have loyaltly, most people use Windows, even all the people who "hate" MS use it. Even if it's pirated, their still using windows. Why? Because it's easier to set up then linux and more stable then OS X.
If halo2 was online today, loyalty and their brand would be stronger, people would encourage each other to buy, instead they shut down what was once available and the door to success by means of loyalty more and more.
Halo 2 was shut down due to decling population, and the declining population of Original Live. I remember staring at empty lobbies for non-h2 games. And all the people who jumped in at the end were just trying to play one last time when more people were on.
To me it had the opposite effect on sales. Loyalty is king and that is why Microsoft is not king.
Do your research before you make another post. MS is #1 in desktop OSes, #2 in web servers, and they sell a lot of office suites and programming IDEs too.
EDIT: Tottalymassive, I thought you were supposed to be boycotting BNET like it said in your sig....oh wait, no one ever boycotts.
