Subject: Should Bungie Remake Marathon?

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

Everyone thats posted on it has said that it's a great game. It's also old enough that most people haven't played it, so it would practically be a new game to them. However, there's a rather long process to download it if you don't have a Mac. How many of you out there think that Bungie should remake the Marathon series for X-Box or X-Box 2? Or any other old school Bungie game for that matter? Maybe if we get enough support behind it they would actually do it.

And by re-make, I just mean updating the graphics, maybe adding in voice work (that's iffy though), and of course porting it to the X-Box with suitable controls.

I'm certifiable.

Where's the option for "none of the above"?

I think Bungie should keep their past practice of moving onward and upward to the next project, instead of endlessly revisiting their old titles. That way they stay away from remaking the same stuff over-and-over until it gets stale and retroactively taints the earlier greats.

-- Steve thinks that a Marathon port to N-gauge or something would be neat, but hopes that Bungie saves its major resources for something new.

Edited to fix typo. Not too important, but it bugged the heck out of me.

Now if Bungie were to authorize or "spin off" a team whose job is to resurrect, renew and remarket fresh versions of their old-school classics, I might be ok with that. If Bungie were to approve revised and updated releases of some of their older titles, I would definitely buy them because of the Bungie ass-kicking "seal-of-approval".

you mean like the aleph one project? and you dont even have to buy it! of course it isnt official, but it's still oldschool bungie goodness.

guys if they re made the MARATHON series, that would be dumb, because it's alread a legend and it rocks the way it is. making a new series would just make people forget the original.

When do I not agree with RN54 and Steve?

This concept has been played over many times and it always ends with, "and that is why we shouldn't redo marathon."

A very sad thought though...

It is a known fact that you cannot remake classics... Always ALWAYS end up being...... whats the word.... Sucky. Yes, im thinking Planet of the Apes. Gus van Sant's terrible, word for word remake of Psycho. The problem lies, in many ways, in the catch 22 situation of reamking the film (or, in this case, game).

If they 'Re-imagine', as Tim Burton did with Apes, their is uproar, as many of the nolstalgic fans will complain about their favorite bits being missed out, new things added that,to the older fans at least, are not in-keeping with the ideas of the original film.

As for the scene for scene remake, well, why bother? Just rent the original.

I was thinking and didn't properly describe an actual sub-division of Bungie that might use the Halo (1 or 2) engine(s) to remake properties such as the Marathon series, PiD, etc. using up-to-date tech combined with the orginal game's theme, story and atmosphere.

Thats what I meant with my original post. It seems that Bungie was (sadly, might I add) rather unknown to MOST people until Halo came out, seeing as how so many Bungie fans were made then (myself included). I'm not saying that they should change the plot, just that they should re-do it with the Halo 1 or 2 engine, as Recon Number 54 said.

And I'm pretty sure I ran out post slots (there's only eight), so that's probably why I didn't put in the "none of them" option.

Also, for you Stalin, do you really think that Bungie would screw up their own game? The main problem is that they created these games before the event of modern consoles, and therefore the graphics are subpar by todays standards, and the games themselves are unknown to the larger audience. It would also be a smart financial move by Bungie to do this, as the games would sell extremely well, and they wouldn't have to worry about making the story or designing the levels. They'd just have to update them.

Dang, I'm editing this alot. Well, anyway, I just wanted to add one thing. Wouldn't it rock to have Marathon for your X-Box, with Halo-esque controls and Halo 2 class graphics? If you say that it wouldn't I would be forced to think you insane.

Yes, sorry, I did not take into consideration that Bungie would be remaking their own game..... Also it was a mistake to compare the Videogame industry to the Film industry... While the mainstream film industry has become (mainly) about profit margins and corporate awareness, the video game industry has not. Not yet, anyway. So perhaps it could work, maybe I was wrong.

I do however still think a remake would be a mistake... I mean do you complain that the special FX in The Terminator, for example, are 'Subpar by todays standards' and The Terminator should therefore be remade? I think not. I would be so angry if this happened, as the film would be made WITHOUT the Governator. A BIIIIIG mistake.

The game may have primative graphics by todays standards, but this fact is highly endearing. It brings back memories of days of old, etc etc. It is a retro game- the beauty of retro games is that they are ugly, and dont give a damn.

Remeber un gato, beauty is only skin deep. It is what is inside that counts.

Yes, I have to admit that that is true. I think that my main problems are that 1) I didn't really start playing video games until the N64 and 2) I never was able to get used to the controls for Marathon. I'm not good with PC first person shooters.

I still, however, stand by my decision. While retro are indeed endearing, many of todays gamers aren't yet old enough to look back on "days gone by". The main thing is still that's it IS a fun game, which no one has disputed, and I believe that It should be made accesible more easily to more people.

As for the "it's what is inside that counts line", I'm not saying that they should get rid of "what's inside". I also love the first Terminator movie, although it is still an unfair comparison. While it was made before computer special effects had been introduced, movies had still been around for quite some time. Marathon, however, was made when the Mac was considered a viable gaming platform. As far as games go, that is a LONG time ago. And, as I said before, many gamers today haven't been around for that long. I say many because I know that quite a few have, including Recon up there.

I think the conclusion we can make is that Marathon could be remade for the newer members of the Bungie community, so that they can experience the game in the same way that they experienced Halo.

I have been looking at it from an older members point of view... If it ain't broke don't fix it. However, perhaps a remake would increase interest in Marathon, and allow the newer members to experience the story etc and find out what all the fuss is about.

Once again, agreed. I was intrested enough to read the entire plot, and I would really like to play the game on a console.

Although I have one question: If it were remade, would you play it?

I think a Marathon remake would be pretty neat actually.

Remaking video games is very common practice, and there have been many, many successes in the field. For example, look at the original Quest for Glory series. Sierra completely revamped the first (and I think later second) game of the series and the updated version was still an excellent game with updated graphics, an easier (albeit different) input system, etc...

The fact of the matter is, unlike the film industry, when computers advance, the old software becomes largely unusable and impossible to find on newer machines. Movies that were huge successes 10 or 20 years ago are still easy to find today. Games that were big 10 years ago are more or less gone.

That's what makes remakes by the companies that have the ability critical to keeping a lot of these games alive. However, I'll agree that it's very hard after so many years to capture the original feel of the source material. But a lot of "Collections" and such that do minimal graphics updates and if necessary interface changes and a recompile to 32-bit have been popular for a decent handful of old series (with some success... Nintendo has been doing this to *huge* avail with the GBA lately).

All in all, I think a well-planned update and re-release would be really cool. But... not until AFTER Halo 2 ;-)

This has been posted before, and the answer is, No. Without Alexander Seropian, there is no Marathon, and that means there is no remake either. Sorry.

This is a prime example of a new user thinking he can just come on these forums and tell us what we can and cannot discuss.

No. None. They're classics and they should stay that way. If they want to repackage them and remarket them for current times, that's fine, sure, but in no way should the games be "updated" or changed from what they are. A 3D new graphics Marathon would be horrible because that'd probably mean we'd lose the Terminal-style storytelling. If they remade Marathon with full 3D like modern games and kept terminals and whatnot... that'd be interesting. It would also be interesting to see if the original extremely amazing level design can be kept using current technology. (The level designs in the Marathon Trilogy rival current game level designs, in my mind.)

As have I, my man-in-a-simian-suit-viewing friend, as have I.

Mine (Yes, I own them, too--the whole six disc box set) were a gift for a birthday, but I'm such a Roddy McDowall geek (I even loved "Overboard"), I'd have bought them.
My wife and I spent two days watching first the best--#1, #2 (I realize now it's thinly veiled anti-war propaganda) and #3 (my favorite by far), then suffering (and mocking them all the way) through the rest.
