And for a little bit more specific information on what type of router you need go here: -blam!- me!-j/k. And choose your internet service provider, it should then tell you some more info on the router each company knows will work with Xbox Live.

my netgear wgr614 works flawlessly. i might go buy the xbox wireless adapter or a wireless bridge today and try to ditch the wires running to my xbox.

a little by the way info. if you are going to go wireless it really doesn't matter if you buy 802.11b or 802.11g.

Speeds
* Broadband - Typically 1.5mbps
* 802.11b - 11mbps
* 802.11g - 54mbps

As you can see your bottleneck is your internet speed. So unless your are going to be transferring HUGE (i mean really large) files between computers on your network save the money and go with 802.11b.

a little note on my comment earlier about my netgear working flawlessly. i recently found out that the type of NAT protection can be a huge factor on the games you can join and who can join your games.

There are three NAT levels that you can have

1 - Open: Can connect with all NAT levels
2 - Moderate: Can connect with other users with open and moderate NAT levels
3 - Strict: Can only connect to users with an Open NAT level.

My netgear has a strict NAT level which can be a problem. I can not play any games hosted by someone with a moderate or strict NAT level. Also if I host a game only people with a Open NAT level can connect to myh games.

My recommendation has changed to go with a router that has the xbox live label on it. Your best bet would be one of the linksys routers.

Needless to say I will be purchasing a new router her shortly.
