I know there are several people who want a Halo movie, but I was thinking how much better a Marathon movie could be. So, I decided to start this thread (which, knowing my threads, will die within about 2 hours) for the creative users here so they could give their ideas for a Marathon movie.

I think a Marathon movie could work better than a Halo movie because it could be a lot more intense (sort of like "Alien) and thought-provoking (How far can we take artificial intelligence? What are the consequences of living in a society where man and machine have essentially become one?).

My idea: I decided to scrap the whole alien-invasion thing for the Marathon movie. Mainly because I felt it would seem too much like a direct rip-off of the "Alien" movies, since I would like the movie to go more in a scary and tense direction, than an action movie where a man shoots a bunch of aliens. So, without the aliens the movie would be less likely of being brushed-off as another "Alien" copycat.
But how does this movie work without the Phfor? Well, I thought the AIs Durandal and Leela can still be in the movie, but instead of the Phfor, cyborgs and the such could be used.

So, the storyline would be something along the lines of the AI at Marathon becomes rampant, and since the AI runs everything technology-wise at Marathon, the cyborgs go crazy and start slaughtering the colonists. It soon becomes a story of survival, man vs. machine, for a group of survivors on Marathon.

That's just the gist of my idea for a Marathon movie. Now you post your ideas, and discuss those ideas. Remember: have fun and no flaming other people's movie ideas.

Then it just seems like a rip off of terminator or some other movie like the matrix, plus old schoolers would not be happy, I say go with Aliens.

NO!

First off... the player/main character is a cyborg! Secondly the player/main character cannot have a name or it spoils it :P which eliminates alot of movieness (making up words here)

Even if you did skip the second point, to go with the ideas proposed eliminates the movie as Marathon. The Aliens were an essential part of the story, used to build alot of suspense with the AI's, to knock some of them out of action for periods of time, and for there to be a more urgent threat.

What you would have to do is Enemy at the Gates... A story where the most immediate enemy is less of a pull on the story, just an obstacle.

And I think it'd be hard to fit in the whole story in a measly two hours... though I'm sure theres a talented individual who could pull it off somehow and leave us all open mouthed with amazement.

And just as a note... you cannot make a movie without somebody saying you're ripping ideas off something else... what you must do is something original with the story... like 2001 space odyssey with a 6th sense ending ;)... a strange analogy I know, but it works!

Ach! Was ist los?

I've been working on a Marathon screenplay; posted an early draft of it here a couple of months ago.

My version follows the in-game sequence of events (slightly compacted) with extra scenes involving Volker von Muller and the nine Mjolnirs down in the colony. The hero does a fair amount of self-commentary and has his background revealed through a series of flashbacks.

I've gotten lots of positive feedback from the folks over at Marathon.Bungie.Org and hope to do a Marathon 2 script if this one ever gets finished.

Is your screenplay posted over at MBO? I'd like to read it.

Yeah, if a Marathon movie is made then it shouldn't be some action-packed, slow-motion, gun frenzy.

My script could be either CG or live-action, depending on the final length. There was a really old draft on the MBO Story Forum, but I'd prefer to try getting the current edition hosted somewhere.

w00t! Yes a Marathon movie would be a verrrrry difficult task. But not impossible, If anyone's seen the Evangelion series of anime, including both movies, you can see that a story as complex as Marathon's can be portrayed, at least in the anime medium. Live action/CGI probably wouldn't work nearly as well. Having played all 3 Marathon's, it seems anime would be the obvious choice; even the graphics are reminiscient of the anime style. To make it all CGI or live action would remove the very dark comic-book feel to the game, which is at least 43.7 percent why I enjoyed the game so much. Even a tv series would be awsome, as there is so much story to convey, a feature length film could not do it justice, and the sheer volume of information would be overwhelming to someone unfamiliar with the game. Halo on the other hand would be a perfect candidate for a live action/CGI movie, as the story can easily be compressed into a 2.5 hour spectacle. Frankly, I'm a little sick of the Halo story, seeing as how I've beat the game innumerable times, and read the books, I don't know if I could deal with a movie. Halo 2, is a different story all together, and seems even more cinematic. Who cares about some derelict ring world when the future of Earth and all of mankind is at stake!

Nope. It will never and should never be done. No matter how close you get to following the story or how well you make the characters... it's still a video game, and you cannot reproduce video game interactivity in a movie. The greatness of video games that make movie copies of them suck is the fact that in a movie you can't control what's going on. Any Marathon movie would be horrible. Halo is already horrible, so a movie might be a step in the right direction.

It would be a lot easier to cover the complex plot of Marathon in a book series. As a Lord of the Rings and Dune fan I'd thoroughly enjoy that.
