Well, I work for eBay.
The 10% is the typical amount most charity auctions folks/entities take to cover their costs. It is an estimated percentage since there is no way to really determine how much the actual cost will be. Also, when the item is listed they need to specify the % from the very beginning.
Can you imagine the example you gave, something sells for 100k and there is no provision to cover the cost? The person auctioning the item will have to come up with at least $1500 + just for the final value fee. They said the shipping is free. But can you imagine you having to pay $1000.00 to ship the statue to somewhere in Japan?
The thing is, the higher the dollar amount goes, the more there will be a left over after covering costs with the 10% not given to charity.
"edit: in the past" The charity option did not include the option to not donate a certain percentage. So the person/entity auctioning the stuff would have a lot of costs besides the time spent and the actual cost of the goods they were donating.
If you think getting 10% to cover costs is too much you could do things better. You could buy everything and relist them for charity and donate 100%. Then absorve all the eBay, PayPal and shipping costs besides the actual cost of the item being sold.
All I can say is that it sucks all that cool stuff is going to sell for so much I cannot even think about purchasing anything. Only the wealthy or totally crazy nerdy fan will be able to spend money to buy any of that stuff. What makes me feel good about it though is that the money from the sales is going to average people like me who got affected by a natural disaster.
Good job bungie and HBO!!!
I'd be more than happy to help any way I can.

good luck on it though. I find it funny that only 90% is going to the red cross. O well, bungie has to make a lil money off there stuff right?
glad to see some bungie rep or ebay rep noticed this and desided to explain the "90 %" ordeal. That is of course, if your from ebay, which you and i know anyone can make a claim there someone on cyber space. Not that i am doubting you of course, since your explanation is very logical. To bad all the fees it takes to run the auction could not be free as well to make sure that it was 100%. :/
To bad eh? None the less, it could be argued that people have to make a living some how.
What postion do you work in if you dont mind me asking. I was very close to getting some of the stuff, but since i saw the 90% goes to charity deal, i was a little uneasy. Hell, i am single and on my own, with a lil under 5 grand for holliday -blam!- in a now ended CD. But i am still a little uneasy after seeing it.
Thx for reading this,

EDIT: was some spelling errors that i could catch >_<
