Anything beyond a 6600GT will get you the same looking graphics, the game engine can only get as good as the game developers designed it to run.
So yes a 7800GTX might be able to get you faster frame rates but anything beyond 75FPS your eyes cant tell the diffrence so theres really no point. For Halo at least.

yea i wish i had a 7800, i have a geforce FX 5500 and i can turn all the graphics up all the way but i have to run the resolution at 640x480 but i dont care cuz i love all the details and i get around 60 fps. heres some pics of my 5500 in action. also ive seen halo on a 6800 one time and it looked way better than my 5500 and it made the master cheif look more shinier and stuff, maybe it like overrides it and uses pixel shader 3.0

jesus, my ati 9600PRO atlantis looks better than those pics, i really think that wit ATi you get the biggest bang for your buck, and in the pc parts market never disclude any manufacturer because you dont like the name or you only like one name brand, other people are constantly comming out with newer better technologies, so the odds are that that one brand wont have the latest, greatest, and cheapest all the time,
hope that helps

a 6600 GT is perfect for Halo...if you shoot for anything higher, then you're probably thinking about playing other games like Half Life 2, and games with SM 3.0

The newer ATi Radeon X1800 series performs better than Nvidia 7800 series when it comes to heavy shader performance. Nvidia's cards are just raw pixel fill rate (basically, just pumps data really fast). As new games use shaders more and more intensely, ATi will shine.

If you still don't get it, ATi is like AMD, while Nvidia is like intel.

I have a nVidia Geforce 6800 DDL Ultra (256MB) in my G5 (2x2.3 2.5 GB RAM)
I had a 6800 GT for a while (repair shop messed up) I didn't notice much difference, just a slight drop in FPS.
I have a very small halo screenshot on my web page, here are links to some of the highlights, I won't spam here, but you can figure out the site from the links:

http://www.sonic84.com/halo/bigimages/action.jpg

Really it all depends if HAlo.app can take advantage of the cards full potential, I get mild distortion when I look around quickly, but I don't when I play Doom 3, but Halo really is a beautiful game.

Ati is probably better for Halo, as they can actually render the camo effect, and the nvidia cards cant. You either see a black person, or nothing at all. Anything above a 5700/9600 will get you nothing but fps. Anything above 30 frames per second and your eye can't see the difference.

I've recently switched to using vsync, and it's actually easier to turn around in a panic and fight in MP than with just 30 fps. Just my two cents.

Counter Strike Source and Halo? then your gonna want an ATi card...

X800 pro's are around 180 bucks these days, but other than that shoot for something of an equvilant of a 6800 GT, an X800 XL
