Scottish and stereotyped

Frankie, you will be usurped!

I have never bothered with Xbox Live but like many other people I will be setting it up for Halo 2. I just have a few questions:

1. Do I need a router? I am with BT Yahoo Broadband and it says on their website that I will need to purchase a router for about £60. Can I not just use my normal Broadband connection. I know it means I will only be able to use my PC and Xbox one at a time online but is it possible?

2. Can I use a debit card to sign up? (e.g. Visa Electron)

Thank you :)

1) no you don't have to have a router. If you don't mind just having one hooked up at a time you can just hook up straight to your modem as long as it has an ethernet port on back.

2) i think it has to be a credit card.

Another Note:

If you are going to get broadband BUY A ROUTER!!!!! You need the hardware NAT/Firewall protection. In this day and age it is way to dangerous to have broadband without a router. I would NEVER have an always on high speed connection without the protection of a router!!!

lol thanks for that! :) I guess that's why I spent two weeks trying to rid the spyware off of it :P I guess I'll get a router then not just because I can have both connected up but for the safety. Warrenty just went up on my computer, needs protection.

On the subject of payment, I guess I'll just have to apply for a credit card then :S

Thanks once again :)

concerning routers

There are three NAT levels that you can have

1 - Open: Can connect with all NAT levels
2 - Moderate: Can connect with other users with open and moderate NAT levels
3 - Strict: Can only connect to users with an Open NAT level.

My netgear has a strict NAT level which can be a problem. I can not play any games hosted by someone with a moderate or strict NAT level. Also if I host a game only people with a Open NAT level can connect to my games.

My recommendation is to go with a router that has the xbox live label on it. Your best bet would be one of the linksys routers.

Needless to say I will be purchasing a new router here shortly.

Don't worry I sorted it all out and have protection now but thanks a lot with the router advice. I guess I'll go through BT as they have a router especially built for Xbox gaming. It may be dear but from the sounds of it, it will be worth it. Good luck in finding your new router :)

P.S. Is this a good choice?

The Speedtouch 530...and I'm in Britain (Scotland) so I'm afraid they're not as good quality and they're dearer.

sounds like it will work alright. xbox.com didn't seem to have any known issues with it.

In reply to the "can i pay with a debit card" question... if you debit card says visa on it, it can be used anywhere a credit card can. ex. most sites i buy stuff from say type of payment and the only choice is credit card so i select that and then select visa and put in my debit card number and it works exaclty the same.

Actually a switch is better/faster and still has the built ins. I suggest a Link Sys.

router/switch is almost used interchangably anymore. most routers from linksys and netgear that i have seen include switches. you would almost have to go out of your way to buy a router that doesn't include a switch.

I just wanted to throw in a quick tip for the cable internet guys.

You probably already know this but. Ok when you hook up your xbox to your cable modem and it doesn't work. Just unplug the modem from the outlet and plug it back in. It should work, no router needed.

Thanks all for the advice! :) I now know I don't need a credit card and can buy that router straight off BT.

A SpeedTouch 530 Router: £70
An Xbox Live Starter Kit: £40
Halo 2 LE: £30
Sniping my mates: Priceless

Don't you love Mastercard...? I might just apply for one anyway :P
