I thought that the walker in the field represented Shane's choice. the walker out on the field is walking alone, away from the forest into the road. Shane wants to leave the farm, but is having trouble doing that. I thought that when Shane sees the walker, he sees how he will be alone and venturing into territory that he doesn't know and is likely to die. So Shane realizes that they are much like walkers: individually, humans are very weak and will fight each other before they work together. At that point Shane knows that he can't really leave and expect to survive without the rest of the camp.
Also, foreshadowing to probable farm raid by zombies.
