I would never put a film released in the past couple of years in a top ten film list. The reason for this is simple.... In my mind it has not stood the test of time. For me, a great movie is one you can watch over and over again, and not tire of it.
The movies I have listed are classics (in my mind, if no body elses) in terms of everything, and have in many ways added something special- A new sub-genre, a new actor or director etc. Nowadays films-even very good ones- are the result of an economy of scale, and studios are churning out the same old same old, year in year out. I will go and watch a new film, enjoy it etc, but the amazement will (rarely) be there as it was with other (classic) films.
Oh i forgot- An hounarable mention goes out to The Usual Suspects. THE best twist in the history of cinema. A fantastic film-I actually met Pete Poslethwaite in one of my many local pubs (or 'bars' as you yanks call them).
