I was wondering why the maximum amount of characters in a news post is 3,975.

When the thread post is 10,000.

Surely there should be more for a news post, I always have to provide a link to the news instead of actually posting all at once.

I was disappointed when writing a weekly update for my group that I had to split it up. And then they were out of order, and the whole thing was a rather messy situation.

Yeah, the news character limit should be higher.

I wonder, has anyone actually used up the 10,000 character limit? To me it seems impossible, but that might just be me.

I would be better if that was for the news posts.

Well, I guess because...I really don't have a clue.

But there has to be a reason.

When I rant, the farthest I've gotten is about 2500 characters left.

The maximum amount of data a row can have in SQL Server 2000 is 8060 bytes. For a News story, that means 3975 bytes is the maximum. This is because each character takes up 2 bytes (it is stored in an international format, not the traditional 1 byte method). And if you're wondering why 3975 bytes and not 4000, then remember there are other pieces of data needing to be stored for each news story.

Please remember that you also have the resources section in your groups. Forums also provide a longer limit because they use a different method of storing data.

I said I have 2500 left. That means if I wrote 2500 more letters, I couldn't anymore because it would exceed the limit of 10000.
