Subject: Do u think its possible for the future to run into halo style?

Do u guys think that maybe 150 years from now United Nations will set up a Space Command making it UNSC? cud we possibly deploy Mark IV suits for warfare? cud this all happen in the future?

  • 11.01.2010 6:42 PM PDT

I'm sure at some point in the next millennium we will have at least some similar technology to Halo, possibly in your lifetime.

  • 11.01.2010 7:35 PM PDT

1) Mars colonization is underway (planning, expect 2030)

2) We already have MJOLINIR like armor, it's a mech suit that increaees the wearers strength by five.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

I always thought it was a World War III (also involving conflicts on Mars) that shook up the world's governments and the UNSC emerged from that.

If I don't believe in him...

why should he believe in me?

out of all of the sci-fi stories ive gone through, halo(the colonization and alien contact part) is the most plausible option

  • 11.01.2010 8:29 PM PDT

I would say that it could happen in about 200 years cuz the government is prob working on something simular to spartans then were gonna start deploying squads of em then giant unsc frigats for space combat and then space stations for extra support to make sure we always have the upper hand in the WW3

  • 11.02.2010 6:19 AM PDT

lets look at the problems facing our technological advancement into a 'space-faring' species, the first is current world order. we have (right now) the technology to render petrol powered cars obselete, why don't they use it do you think? the simple answer is its not in the current governments best interests to render the worlds biggest industry (the oil industry) obselete overnight, but it is possible. we could go to mars, if you don't believe that im sorry but you are entirely niave, so why don't we? simply because its expensive and very dangerous, also it doesn't hold any real benefits, what advantage does mars give the current regimes?

so i think the problem is our current un-willingness to use the technologies we already actually have, we need an enormous 'event' of some sort to change our thinking, something to show us that we aren't at all safe on this world, something like yellowstone national park eruption, wiping out an enormous chunk of the mainland US for example, the impending impact of a comet/asteroid, something to bring humanity together rather than split them apart, no one nation can take on the challange alone. some huge event would show humanity that its not in our best interests, as a species to continue fighting amongst eachother for something as un-needed as oil or religion (one of the biggest causes of problems on this planet). the second we start approaching the universe as it is, rather than believing in 'higher beings' and what not the quicker we can ensure our survival as a species.

so what technologies do we possess or on the fringes of science right now that are halo-esque?

1) railguns/coilguns: both of them are current, and both of them work. they are in their infancy at the minute but it will take only decades to perfect the technology, so thats not at all hard to believe, railguns are also very very simple.

2) nuclear fusion: again a current but infant technology, fusion reactors power all UNSC ships. again i think fusion reactors are decades (at most) away, so again very very possible, very clean and very efficient.

3) MJOLNIR armour: we are already messing around with powered exoskeletons, so this is again not 'fiction' as such. there is no reason we couldn't make an armoured suit for combat purposes (probably more akin to the SHIELD troops from the game 'ACT OF WAR' rather than MJOLNIR armour), but as time goes on i would guess the technology would become more streamlined and efficient, thus becoming more like the spartan armour, shields however are a totally different problem, since no theory or anything exists on a 'shield'.

4) faster-than-light travel: this is theoretical physics, the current theories on how things work allow for faster-than-light propulsion through space 'folding' or whatever exotic method. the only problem is figuring out how to put these theories into practice, personally believe its only a matter of time before it becomes a reality, think of it this way, humanity has defeated all barriers that have stood in our way to date, don't think light-speed will be different.

5) sub-light propulsion: rockets are woefully ineffective, but their are infant technologies such as plasma rockets and ion engines that could solve this problem, however ion engines provide such little thrust they aren't effective over short trips, only over very long distances where they simply continue to accelerate. plasma rockets are more 'infant' but have much higher thrust potential, plasma engines are whats used in the UNSC fleet i believe, so its theoretically possible right now, not in 500 hundred years.

all we need to do is quit all the crap and work together to ensure that no matter what happens to this planet, we (humans) will persevere, we need to stop all the rubbish about going back to the moon and just freaking do it! stop all the 'discussions' on going to mars, and just do it! both are possible, the only thing standing between them and reality are current world politics...!

The Super Suit

This video shows the suit already being tested by today's soldiers.

The suit currently being developed will probably resemble the MJOLNIR armor when they fit an outer casing to it.

  • 11.06.2010 12:45 PM PDT

wouldn't imagine it would be full body armour, like MJOLNIR. though its possible militaries never seem to want to do that sort of thing, no idea why, probably expense. also by no means are the whole US army for example going to be deployed in things like that, and they are still many years away, also they aren't really discreet, and stealth can be just as effective/more effective than armour protection. doubt that will be deployed with forces, what is the purpose? especially with the MULE to carry baggage, etc.

This.

yea...i was watching Future Weapons one day and theye were talking about exosksletons....then when they siad they were going to put armor and weapons on it it looked EXACTLY like Jorge....this time will come sooner than you think

  • 11.06.2010 2:14 PM PDT

Make me some moonshine

There already is an UNSC.
But it dont stand for united nation space command.

so no...they wont do that

Bring it on!

Someone already made a real-working Warthog. Proof

Pretty soon, we'll see a homemade Scorpion or Falcon running around. So all we need now is an alien race to fight and we're set!

Well said, came in here to say something but you stole the words right from my mouth.

Two things i'd like to add to your sub-light category though.

Personally i think a major leap in anti-matter propulsion could pop up in the next decade or so, meaning within the next 50 years i could see that being a primary method of propulsion for our space program. (Again this will be largely related to the apathy current governments show space exploration, and the bleak budgets put forward for them)

The other means of transport i have heard about is something along the lines of Electromagnetic propulsion, i haven't looked into it too much as i couldn't find very much information. But basically (and i mean extremely basically), it involves magnetic acceleration around a celestial body with a powerful magnetic field, such as Jupiter. I remember hearing one astrophysicist claim that 80% light speeds could be possible in under 10 years.

On a related note, ******'s mom has really nice boobs, and it doesn't take much booze or encouragement to get her to let the puppies out of the pen...if you know what I mean...

Oh really ItalianMoffo LOL

No doubt when we make first contact with aliens, we will in some way upset them (c'mon are world leaders don't have a clue) and start a planetary war, at which point the whole world will be forced to band together, and no doubt they'll unveil some crazy technology they had all along. they already have mech suits. and if we're in a planetary war, I don't think the issue of "It's too expensive" will matter. So yes, in the future, there will be a war, mankind will step up it's game. And Chuck Norris will become master chief. 'nuff said.

  • 11.06.2010 6:14 PM PDT

well i for one don't think that technology will be the issue, more likely politics and economics holding us back as a species, to be honest its been that way ever since the US landed on the moon, its been all talk, no go!

I think pretty much everything seen from the UNSC in halo is very plausible within the next 500 years, except slipspace drives and artificial gravity.

FTL travel is not like when we broke the sound barrier, that was simply a question of thrust, the lightspeed barrier is something else entirely. It is a physical constant of the universe, like gravity, electromegnetism, the nuclear forces etc. To break these is to break the very fabric of what reality is. Put it this way, from what we know currently it would take an infinite amount of energy to make a ship travel merely at lightspeed, let alone anything beyond that. And lightspeed is still much much too slow to maintain a functioning interstellar civilisation. Four years to the nearest star you know.

Folding space or something similar would ive read probably take more power than our whole galaxy puts out, so good luck with that. Ditto warp drive, to warp the fabric of space like that is no small feat.

Slipspace, well thats just totally made up, although ive read about there being tiny 11 dimensional manifolds scattered throughout space according to some theories. Its not beyond the pale to theorize there may be many higher dimensions in spacetime we could eventually work with to get around, although the problem there will be that we as a species have so much trouble trying to conceptualise any more than 3 dimensions. Navigation would be a nightmare. Try and imagine a four dimensional cube right now. Look it up on youtube if you dont believe me. There are only a handful of people alive who can even begin to do this, such as prof. stephen hawking etc

As for non-centrifugal artifical gravity, unless we discover and manipulate the graviton or something, this is gonna be tricky. Discovering the higgs boson would be a great help with this though, the higgs is the particle which is theorized to give the property of mass. The LHC may discover the higgs sometime this decade, it will be a great day in science if so.

All these opinions are based of what i understand of our current understanding of physics, which is almost certainly just scratching the surface of what the true nature of reality is.I believe there is still so much left to discover in science, and so many unanswered questions. Its quite possible and even probable imo that there may be scientific revelations in the centuries ahead that make all this stuff possible. Weve just got to keep ourselves alive as a species until then so that we can leave this planet and venture out into the stars.

They are already working on slipspace drives and such. In laboratories, they have already creating artificial, miniature black holes.

I think we can easily have Halo-style technology in the next 200 years. We already have scientists working on Spartan-like armor suits and we'll have surpassed Halo's firearm technology within the next 25 years easily.

Star Wars/Star Trek is the most unrealistic

Looking at you Scorpion tank.
