Hello,
I have an idea to help out people that will be buying an HDTV for the next installment of Halo. This is something that I came up with after something bad happened to me.
I bought a 51" Hitachi Widescreen HDTV a few months back and I play Halo 2 pretty regularly. I was invited into a game that someone was using to film, so it had no HUD. We used a well known glitch to get to the bottom of Ivory Tower, where it is very bright white. That day was a sad day for me, because I had discovered that some of the HUD was slightly "burned in" to my screen. However, I wasn't too upset because Halo 2 was the main reason I bought the TV.
So it made me think, 'what could be done to stop that from happeneing?'. If you notice, the Xbox dashboard will fade out if it sits idle for too long. You can still see everything, but it will not cause a "burn in".
What a simple, yet effective idea!
So why not do the same with the HUD? For example, if I am playing a game, and I don't get hurt/damaged in a set amount of time (10-15 seconds) then my health meter should fade out (not completly, just enough to make it transparent). Same with ammo, grenades and radar. Why do those images have to be so out in the open all the time? I mean, wouldn't it also make for a better view if they faded out just a bit, only to show up when you actually NEED to see the information.
Now the way I see it, you should still be able to see all the info even when it is fully faded/shaded, but not enough to cause a "burn in". I am sure some people would not want a permanant reminder of Halo while they are watching their favorite movie.
It is too late for me, but I know my next TV will also be HDTV, and I would like for this not to happen again. Just for the record, I am very careful about letting it sit for any lengthy period of time on one screen. However, there is nothing I can do about HUD placement. (When I am the one paying for a $2,000 TV, I can assure you, I am very careful.)
Anyway, please take this seriously. If any of the Bungie staff reads this and thinks 'good idea, but not my dept.', then please spread the word... tell whoever it matters to. I am not claiming this 'idea' as my own, just trying to help make Halo a better experience for myself and others.
Thanks,
Eric Cramer
