A very good idea, sometime I need to put together all my ideas for Halo 3. Do think Bungie would listen?

Hello,

I have an idea to help out people that will be buying an HDTV for the next installment of Halo. This is something that I came up with after something bad happened to me.

I bought a 51" Hitachi Widescreen HDTV a few months back and I play Halo 2 pretty regularly. I was invited into a game that someone was using to film, so it had no HUD. We used a well known glitch to get to the bottom of Ivory Tower, where it is very bright white. That day was a sad day for me, because I had discovered that some of the HUD was slightly "burned in" to my screen. However, I wasn't too upset because Halo 2 was the main reason I bought the TV.

So it made me think, 'what could be done to stop that from happeneing?'. If you notice, the Xbox dashboard will fade out if it sits idle for too long. You can still see everything, but it will not cause a "burn in".

What a simple, yet effective idea!

So why not do the same with the HUD? For example, if I am playing a game, and I don't get hurt/damaged in a set amount of time (10-15 seconds) then my health meter should fade out (not completly, just enough to make it transparent). Same with ammo, grenades and radar. Why do those images have to be so out in the open all the time? I mean, wouldn't it also make for a better view if they faded out just a bit, only to show up when you actually NEED to see the information.

Now the way I see it, you should still be able to see all the info even when it is fully faded/shaded, but not enough to cause a "burn in". I am sure some people would not want a permanant reminder of Halo while they are watching their favorite movie.

It is too late for me, but I know my next TV will also be HDTV, and I would like for this not to happen again. Just for the record, I am very careful about letting it sit for any lengthy period of time on one screen. However, there is nothing I can do about HUD placement. (When I am the one paying for a $2,000 TV, I can assure you, I am very careful.)

Anyway, please take this seriously. If any of the Bungie staff reads this and thinks 'good idea, but not my dept.', then please spread the word... tell whoever it matters to. I am not claiming this 'idea' as my own, just trying to help make Halo a better experience for myself and others.

Thanks,
Eric Cramer

This is an interesting, and relatively good idea. I remember that Advent Rising's HUD would disappear after 10-15 seconds of idle time. The only problem I can see is that some players may find it annoying to watch the HUD disappear, only to be shot a second later and have it reappear. This woud happen constantly in Live games. I for one, don't mind it, but there are others who might.

I'm just a 3D artist trying to go straight.

annother thing that removes screen burn: create a "Bobbing Hud" like you can with the Xbox dashboard. It moves the hud up and down slightly to prevent the screen burn.

So how much time did you spend in this bright area that was not intended to be playable in the first place? Don't get me wrong, I really am sorry that your TV screen has burn in, but it's only your fault.

that doesnt matter, he means when he was there, it was so bright that he could see it easily.

Someone set up us the bomb
on XBL i'm Gangsta Assasin

yeah i think he means that it burned in during the course of many hours of gameplay, and that the whiteness enabled him to see it.

and i totally agree that it is a good idea. maybe after 30 seconds of in game inaction the HUD can disapear, and come right back the second the controls are moved.

Very well written proposition.

Good grammar and a great idea. Congratulations, Eric. You've got my vote.

He's not blaming anyone for the incident, he's just trying to help many of the HDTV users who could have this problem.

I think they should give you the option of full HUD, regular version, minimum HUD, your idea, or no HUD.

First of all, sorry, that is very unfortunate.

Second, burn-in has nothing to do with HDTV. HDTV is a classification for a display resolution higher than the "standard definition" 480 lines interlaced. Burn-in has to do with the phosphor coated screens on cheaper rear projection TV's, combined with user error.

If you own an older, traditional rear projection TV, you should know that burn-in is a risk, and you should have known not to ever let the same image sit for too long.

If you want to avoid it, get a DLP projection TV. They have no phosphor in the screens and won't get burn in. CRT's can, in theory, but the risk is much much less than old projection sets.

I am a Floodian

I like it. The only thing that should be shown at all times is ammo and radar, everything else isnt really necessary.
