Subject: cortana evil?!?!? and possible halo 4?

Stranded in space Edit
"Wake me...when you need me."
John's last words to Cortana
John and Cortana managed to survive the explosion of Installation 04B in the remaining cargo portion of the Forward Unto Dawn, but it was nearly powerless and, without airlocks or a bridge, could not be properly navigated. Cortana, relieved that John had survived, explained this to the Chief, and that it could take years before anyone could discover their distress signal. In a similar conversation to one at the end of Halo 1, Cortana listed what John did and told him "it's finished," and this time, John agreed with her. John placed himself in a cryotube, at which point Cortana said, "I'll miss you." John replied with "Wake me...when you need me."
In 2556, while still stranded in space, Cortana attempted to talk to John while he was still asleep. Unable to get a response from him, she recounted the history of the galaxy, seemingly unaware that John could not hear her, and showing major signs that she was descending into rampancy.[17]

John was last seen in the back half of the Forward Unto Dawn, approaching an unidentified planet.

found this on halo wiki but is the part where it says and showing major signs that she was descending into rampancy true?
and secondly, bungie please make a squeal telling us what happens with master chief, cortana, and possibly the arbiter.

Break down, every single one of you.

I have not seen Halo: Legends, but every reference of it I see points to Cortana descending into rampancy.

Bungie cannot make another Halo game. The lost the rights to Halo when they split with Microsoft. So it is completely up to Microsoft.

If they do make a new Halo game, which they probably will, I don't think they would make Cortana the villain.

  • 11.09.2010 10:12 AM PDT

wait so them loosing the rights dose that mean they would not be able to make any halos or just that microsoft would call the shots.

I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

It'd be a neat twist to see Cortana as an enemy in Halo 4.

I honestly don't have half as much faith in 343 as I do in Bungie, but I might actually buy the game if it turns out that Cortana becomes an enemy.

  • 11.09.2010 11:56 AM PDT

343 are not game developers. They are....story writers, artists, product managers etc....i think.

Theyd have to contract a real game studio to make the next halo game......which is almost certain thy will at some point.

The question is, what is the best studio for the job of making a halo game, besides bungie?

  • 11.09.2010 12:00 PM PDT

Bungle's not making Halo any more. If anyone makes one it'll be 343 industries.

  • 11.09.2010 12:23 PM PDT

I think the unidentified planet (which I got off of google) is the third shield planet or some kind of forrunner planet.

Either way Master Chief will eventually come out of his cryochamber, and then have some weird of adventure.

Rampancy doesn't mean evil. Not the same. But I think she is going to be very much rampant the next time we see her when we see what happens to the Chief. I suspect that she will be meta-stable rampant though, due to her general capability and her forerunner parts.

  • 11.09.2010 1:07 PM PDT

Firstly bungie does not ahve the rights to halo anymore, and rampancy is pretty serious for A.I.'s if she goes crazy cheifs gonna be in serious danger

  • 11.09.2010 1:22 PM PDT

@flamedude this is the definition of Rampancy Rampancy is a terminal state of being for Artificial Intelligence constructs, in which the AI "develops delusions of godlike power", as well as utter contempt for it's mentally inferior makers.[2] When rampancy occurs, there is no way to restore the AI to its previous state and the only alternative is to destroy it before it harms itself and others around it. now how is that not evil?

Indeed it is very likely.

However an evil Cortana ala Durandal would be hilarious.

They lost all right of Halo to Microsoft. Bungie cannot make another Halo game unless Microsoft decided to let them, which I doubt since Microsoft created 343 Industries for that job.

  • 11.09.2010 3:15 PM PDT

Well Cortana may have created herself an early rampancy because of storing and keeping all of the info she found on the halos and other covenant or forerunner structures.

  • 11.09.2010 7:00 PM PDT

no two both

  • 11.09.2010 7:04 PM PDT

So that's how it is. You all ought to know better than that.

It would be interesting to see cortana in full blown rampancy, but if anyone can keep her in check, it would be Master Chief. I suppose we will have to wait and see.

  • 11.09.2010 7:27 PM PDT

Yea would be, but hopefully the people who write the novels decide whats happens with cortana and her rampancy, not the developers.

Rampancy does not always mean evil. Durandal was really more of a chessmaster as opposed to pure maliace-driven antagonist.

i was quite disapointed in the creation of reach and odst. i thought odst was very lame and put a very gun ho attitude in to the game. i havent played reach but i dont like the idea. i was so excited at the end of halo 3 when they gave a unconcluded ending. i would really love to see the development of halo 4. eager to hop back into master chief.

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

No, she isn't rampant, she is pretending to talk to him. She is just passing the time, if you were her, wouldn't YOU talk to the chief, think: She is in space with no one else but MC, and he is frozen, its also going to be a good while till someone is supposed to rescue you, what would you do, I would talk to chief even though he is frozen.

Well she is probably going act like she did when she was captured by the Flood in Halo 3. Now I don't think Cortana would randomly become evil because she was bored!

While Cortana is descending into Rampancy everyone has to keep in mind that (Smart) AI's might know how to pull themselves out of Rampancy.

Just like Mendicant Bias has possibly done so.

  • 11.10.2010 7:57 AM PDT

I dont think rampancy = evil.

Cortana may very well be stuck in rampancy...or just bored, as stated previously.

Even if she's rampant, that doesn't necessarily mean she's done for. There's a theoretical "metastable" phase that AI's might be able to attain. This is the last, and hypothetical, stage of rampancy. She could very well end up being the epitome of AIs, almost human...something probably not achieved since Forerunner AI.

  • 11.10.2010 8:10 AM PDT

I think she would just be bored....question is I know bungie did give up the rights for halo....well then how did they make Halo Reach?

As I recall they gave up the rights after Halo 3...so what gives....besides the prequel story was cool, except I am tired of not having the Chief Involved in these games.
