Subject: Community Death, Flood Birth!

Ok, you've outlined how everything sucks.

Any thoughts on how to change that? Oh, right, the last paragraph, which I'll paraphrase, "Let someone else take care of it."

I stated it simply Chris, me and many other are fed up with trying to fix it. It doesn't work, our threads get ingored or spammed. I didn't even expect this thread to last as long as it does. The cold hard truth is there isn't anythign we can do about it. If the members dont choose to pay attention themselves and work at it, how much we tell them to doesn't make a difference.

You see I dont have the power to actually change things like you do Chris, all a regular member like me cna do is talk. And I'm sorry but I've talked to my limit, I need a break.

This has nothing to do with Halo 2. You joined here today. What was your other account?

You need to face facts, Halo 2 is dieing as more games get on the market. Don't get me wrong, I still play it regularly and it is probably the best game on Xbox, but with 360 around the corner and next generation games rolling out, I'm sure the people who used to inhabit these forums have moved on leaving only us anarchists to make fun of everyone else who is here for whatever reason.

We are a valuable part of this community. It's a shame you don't recognize that.

Bungie is going to be on the next gen. consoles. Bungie willbe here for awhile.

Hey dogbert, if you think he is an idiot why don't you go ahead and post it here. We would love to hear what you have to say.

Aha, so you're Rabbitacular? Wait nvm, I remember reading that name from another place, so this must be the same person with the same account name just slightly changed.

As the moderator who blacklisted your other account last Friday because you can't quite manage to litter-train your threads, let me say that a form of "community" based on destruction of others isn't exactly the one I would like to see fostered on bungie.net.

I'd much rather see the friendly and helpful kind of community, one where members can come to and find people they'd want to meet in real life and/or play online with. That's not entirely dead here, but us Moderators have a lot of dead-brush clearing of noxious threads to do if we don't want that sort of community choked out for good.

We'd appreciate some help here; if folks could just stay away from the flammable threads, avoid killing new threads by hanging all sorts of crud on them, and plant a few good threads every now and then, we'd have a healthy set of forums again.

-- Steve'll also remind folks that creating a 2nd account for the purposes of evading a blacklisting is, in itself, a blacklisting offense. Don't do it.

I think saying the community is "dead" might be a misstatement. A better statement might be that the characteristics you attribute to a good community are stretched more thinly across a larger mass of people. There are still great members here; it just may be that the idiots are speaking louder. Even in some of the most obscure threads you'll find a pearl from a community member surrounded by rubbish. What you defined as a community is still there, it's just harder to notice.

I will say that it seems a tad more cliquish though. I understand its human nature, and maybe I simply didn't notice it before, but these cliques seem so cynical of anyone outside of their immediate group. Maybe the crap is starting to wear down people's patience. Patience is certainly one requirement if you wish to maintain a community. Don't give up yet.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I kind of agree with Ancient/snowman. The community at this moment is seperated into so many different parts, that's just not a community in a whole. Just mini communities everywhere. Some say that that's because At the moemnt there is little too talk about, but when i joined B.net almost 2 years ago, there was little to talk about. But we did talk about lots of things. yes we had halo 2 to talk about, that only formed a part of everything. B.net had a real community feeling.

But perhaps that's the whole point, perhaps there still is a community feeling, it just feels different. I'm not sure if the community will ever go back to how it was, i doubt it ever will. i think that those who want the old days back, simply long too much for it. maybe we should adapt ourselves alittle to the new community, i'm not asking you to become a complete idiot, but perhaps we should just accept the fact that idiots now are a part of community.

besides, if things go right, than soon we WILL have a 7th column council to bring things back, soon, bungie will anounce it's newest title, and we all have something new to talk about. Right now is just a depressing time.

I sometimes read double posts and I don't see why it's such a bad thing. Don't get me wrong, I know it's against the rules, but why is it bad?

I think The Flood is still there if you look hard enough. It's still very possible to have an intelligent conversation in there. I must admit ,though, that there is an ever increasing amount of pointless threads just to say (for example) "I love you" or "hi".

Very very VERY well said and true ancient. I have been feeling hte same thing these last 3 weeks especially. Ive posted less, GOOD threads have been slowing down, and jackasses run rampant.

I wish there was a way to fix it, I think the Karma system may actually bring this place up a notch or 2 however, the GOOD members will actually have something to show for it, and may be listened to more often than flamed...

That's the kind of thing that I don't really like. The fact that, when the Karma system is implementd, people will think that their voice matters more then someone elses. It doesn't. I see the Karma system being good as a way to reward the person, not degrade everyone else.

It will continue to be a degradation of jerk-ism, untill the day, a group or person can rise from the ashes that were left and show a better path to a better community. Something, that should fall on the shoulders of the old, however, it has, as said, always been a losing battle. We must also take our responsibility for the degradation as well, in our own way, our own eliteism we, as stated, retreated into our own digital hideouts. How was that a help to the community? Nay, it was not, it was but the abandonment of it, for our own purpose. The Community no longer served us, so we stopped serving the community. It is not what the Community can contribute to you that must come first, but what you can contribute to the community. However, I also see that your synopsys on the growing number of 'Flood' has exponetially increased. I myself, came only after Halo 2. I had visisted much before hand, and read, but never had a desire to participate, untill a thread beckoned me "The Halo Movie Thread". However, I joined at the eve of the 'Flood'. Regardless, I see your point, but we must remeber we hold some amount of responsibility for the degredation around us.

Aye, I remember those times. We didn't really talk about Halo that much.

Awhile back, somebody in the flood forum said "The Underground is here".
Not the actual forum, of course, but the feeling... The relaxed laid-back fun feeling. That was back before Halo2 when there was some semblance of order... and a year later it's back that way, but I think he was right.
This... "Birth of the flood" as the OP calls it; I wouldn't say it's a bad thing... it's simply a change. It's the death of an old system-- Massively popular hit game, on top of the world, everybody's here, and the birth of a new system-- Real fans genuinely interested in the company and what comes next. The "Community Vacumn" you're feeling now is because people are still seperated into their seperate little groups and cliques. With many of the less arduous fans leaving, that means these groups are getting to be small and empty.

So, at the moment, we're still seperate. As things slow down, the community will recongeal into a smaller, more devoted, more dynamic model. So... is "The Flood" coming? Maybe. But remember-- "The Underground is here".
Nothing could make me happier.
