Subject: Community Death, Flood Birth!

I havn't been around here as long as some of the people out there, but lately, I believe I've noticed a bit of what you speak, Ancient. Lately, it seems, I will venture into one of the forums here and to my surprise, I will have nothing that I can even contemplate responding too. In the end, I have to rummage through several threads, sometimes on the second or third page (I don't go beyond that usually, for fear of being flamed ect for reviving dead threads) before I find a couple of threads I find if interest. Maybe that is because I've been around long enough to see every conceivable topic known to man, but I'm more inclined to believe that the amounts of quality threads has diminished to some extent.

That being said, Ancient, I feel I must make a little revelation to you. You say you want to leave these forums for what will very well will be a long time. I'll put this frankly, I don't like to candy coat things. That is asinine, and the absolute worst possible thing to do in a person of your position and stature. While you dislike the current state of the forums, you have done what could be considered by definition as, "giving up". By leaving, you contribute to the very problem you profess. I will continue hope that your decision to leave has come because of a momentary lack of thinking, because I would have thought that you would have known better than to do so.

All I ask is that you stay a bit longer and see how things turn out. Fair enough, yes?

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Ancient, there is a lot of truth in your posts, even though I've been here for a few months, I understand what you are saying. But the only problem is that you have no proposition to fix this, Bungie isn't going to help us, Not anybody but us can fix this, this is our community, we have to fix it. But really there is nothing to do, new members come, they have there months of idiocity, but with time they change, look at me. But yes, there needs to be more disscussions, more intelligant posts, but only we can make those. Antoher thing is that yes, the forums are filled with a lot of people who just want fame, they go around just saying
"THis belongs in zanzibar, or new mombassa", people should add in something that can help him and answer his post, but most people don't even take the time to help anyone. We should be more united, Flamers, people yelling at each other just doesn't make sense, we are the seventh colum, and we should be united.

While I agree that The Flood forum is very...uncontrolled, I doubt that lashing out at an entire forum will solve anything. Besides, not every user in The Flood is an 'anarchist' or an 'idiot'. There are a few gems in all that garbage.

Let me first say that the ammount of people who have actually seriously contributed to this thread adn helped this discussion survive has somewhat renewed my faith. I never expected this thred to get much more than Flames and me Blacklisted, but I had to post it.

Let me also explain my post a little more. I made it very melodramatical for a reason. Though my small points all have reason and should be considered, the big picture in the thread should be looked at in a satirical way. It was just another point I was trying to make.

Let it be known: I am not leaving the community, and probably never will, though like I stated to Chris I am taking a break. There is only so much one can do, and I need a break from doing it for a while. You will still find me in Chapters and the IRC Channels, I just dont plan to visit the Main Forums for a while. I'm on Vacation. :)

I think the community is still doing good. With the success of Halo 2 the community got a little dilluted. The flood is no longer as fun as it used to be. Zanzibar and New Mombosa are inhabitable. All of this has forced me into chapters. There are still some good chapters. You just have to look harder. That is why I' creating that database. Just find a couple groups to fall back on when the forums get bad. I usually go back and forth between the Septagon, Flood, Mathematics, and Body Politic.

I think peoples' views on the different Forum communities are one of the biggest problems here.

The Septagon has it's own little community of frequent posters. Most of them seem to be interested in becoming moderators/becoming respected, few in just getting on and helping the community as a whole. And that's what a lot of the threads tend to be about, if they don't turn into pouting about how good every regular here is.

The Flood too has it's own community. Most of the threads there seem to turn into private discussion between the "regulars". There's even a group for the Flood's "in-crowd". Half the threads are "rate the user" threads" or "look at me" threads, keeping most quality discussion at bay. That's not to say there isn't any, however.

People have these perspectives on the two Forums. I think we all need to stop looking at them thus, and start treating the community as a whole again, while using each Forum for it's actual purpose. The two different communities also need to stop behaving the same, they should be more welcoming and less tight. The Septagon is not a Forum to get respect from the "respected" crew or to become a moderator. Lots need to learn this before continuing to participate. The Flood is not a Forum to just post whatever and have private discussions, but should be to post mildly thoughtful threads and discuss them with the Forum's users and not just the "in-crowd".

I'm not saying there shouldn't be tight-knit communities; just that they should be less concerned with their own affairs and more concerned with the Forum affairs, at least as long as they are on the public Forums.

  • 11.07.2005 11:35 PM PDT

Here's a thought.

The community is as good as the people in it. Complaining about not finding any threads you want to respond to? Make one you would want to respond to. Can't do that? Then maybe you might need to consider the fact that you're, well, boring.

I suspect that part of the "problem" (and it's entirely your problem if you think there's a problem; read on if you can't make sense of that) is that too many people want to discuss the same thing they discussed in 2002, or last month, or two weeks ago, or whenever. They don't want to discuss the new exciting things that everyone else is discussing, they'd rather go around in circles again with another topic about Marathon references in Halo. Guess what! That's boring! It's been done! Everyone else finished discussing that three and a half years ago! Perhaps this is the reason nobody's responding to your threads. Everyone else would rather discuss something new and interesting, not something that was new and interesting two months ago.

Content is more or less in the eye of the beholder. A lot of the "elder gentlemen" of the forums are probably sighing and shaking their heads at the folly of youth when people who joined after they did make a topic about the Halo movie. The irony of course being that six months ago, some of these "gentlemen" (no offence, ladies) were making a topic about the new maps in Halo 2 (or whatever), and the people who joined six months beforehand shook their heads, when of course back then they were making an overexcited post about what they thought about I love bees.

"Oh, ho" chuckled the folks who'd joined six months before that sadly, "Who do these young upstarts think they are, posting a new thread on the forum about this newfangled ruckus as though anybody actually cares about their opinion".

The point being that a heck of a lot more people care about the spring chickens' opinions than care about the boring predictable reaction of the "old guard" who think they're brilliant because they've been reading the same forum for six months. They're not brilliant. They're boring, and their pointless moaning doesn't help this community one bit.

Now, could everyone please get off their goshdarngeegolly high horses and actually start discussing something of substance. How about Bungie's next project? Flesh-eating spiders anyone?

I think you should have a little scratchpad available to your thread posts. Maybe 5k or less. Most people wouldn't include drawings, as most people don't include polls. But on the times you need to draw something, things would be a lot easier.

Sometimes it's just quicker to draw something than explain it. I know you can put it somewhere else and link it. But, it might be even better if scratchpads were built right into the post edit screen.

You've inspired me. For the lexicographically challenged, this is a pictorial summary of my above post. I'm Alric there with the sword, the happy guy is the people who actually post, and the snooty miserable aristocratic moron with the cane there is the "old gentlemen" of the forums.

One man's definition of fun is another man's definition of a blacklisting. At least that's the way it is for some people, at any rate.

and "fun" must have boundaries. Without them, it no longer becomes "fun".

Ok, so i've just finished reading the two pages which sprang up over night and had some thoughts. Firstly, someone pointed out that a community is only as good as it's members. I would like to say i agree with this. Next, Chris points out that we haven't really been suggesting anything, well we do suggest things and some good one do go on the list. The problem is that it takes time, and in between the new features coming out, people get bored and start having "fun".

Now, someone else pointed out that people have different definitions of what is good and what is not. As long as we have this split, there are always going to be people complaining. In order to close this gap, the only way i see is by making sure everyone follows the rules. That way the "non-fun", nostalgic members might find it easier to communicate with others and i'll think you'll find, Reig, that other will start to activly discuss new and interesting things.

You must relaise that we do discuss new things, but at the rate the constant repeated threads appear, people simply give up because as it stands, not a lot gets done about it because it is all perfectly within rules.

Aye.

Screw the B.net political crap, I'm going to The Underground and having fun posting a couple of times. Thats the forums' point in the first place, isn't it? Enjoyment? If you aren't having fun being here, why be here at all?

I for one still have fun here, and will continue to stay as long as that fun continues. Who cares if I don't quite appreciate the influx of new waco members, all forums are essentially that way. You learn to ignore the bad aspects of this place, and embrace the good ones. It's OK to realize there are problems here, but at the same time, don't focus on those problems. You have focus on what you enjoy.

I have some thoughts to contribute to this but i'm out of time for today. Maybe tommorrow. I have rather enjoyed these forums but I don't think the transitional phase we're in is the end of anything.

I dont see a problem with

The Septagon= Good community still, small lapse in active members
New Mombasa= Besides off topic threads the place has amazing storys to read
Library= Some good talks about good ol halo in there always good for a fiew threads

The Flood== read Phychs post

Im not saying that there isnt a swarm of jack nuts who flam, spam, and make dumb threads.
But you have a choice.
Stick to good forums. Stick to good threads. And like me be in some good groups.

oh man i am NOT cool with that thing.

source of the "problem"-

old schoolers- take pride in having known bungie the longest, and also have the most information on the games. this is their main attribute. they debate theories, and talk about the old days, and dwell in the relative safety of their "chapters". there are not many left, and they are looked down upon by most people as being "uppity".

whiners- the lesser seen old schooler, the whiner does several things. he/she attempts to moderate forums, despite having no power whatsoever. the whiner feels he/she knows everything about Bungie, and therefore, should be a moderator. the whiner feels that they are the best of the old schoolers. no one really likes the whiners.

theorist- combs HBO and other Halo sites for vital information on the story. the theorist prides him/herself on knowing everything, and of knowing things that they may or may not know. the theorists find themselves wrong more often that not, though some theories do end up being rather popular in New Mombasa. a lot of misinformation has been spread by the theorists.

true gamer- found most commonly in Zanzibar. they talk about strategy, maps, clans, etc. they come to the forums for the game, and perhaps a little for the story. the true gamer has played every bungie game ever made.

standard gamer- raised on HaloCE, the standard gamer knows a little of the story, and in general comes to B.net to look at their stats. they might say something, but between the old schoolers corrections and the newbiles flaming, they dont stay long.

newbile- one of the thousands who came to Bungie.net after halo2's release, many have not played Halo and do not know that Bungie has other games outside of the series. the newbile is generally between 8-20 years of age, as evidenced by the incredible desire to gain attention. whether it is creating double posts or randomly posting useless threads, using profanity to get attention, or just being an ass in general, the newbile is despised by all, and yet, is the most numerous of all the people's of b.net.

there are other groups of people. but they are insignificant. the personality types listed above are enough to show why there is conflict. everyone has their own ideas of what is "interesting". there is no one way to sort out these things, except by joining a chapter that interests you.

promoting a chapter means, in the case of a theorist, to bring your best theory to New Mombasa, and see if anyone likes it. they will then join.

same goes for any of the above "types". those who enjoy strategy will join a chapter devoted to strategy. etc. the b.net forums are simply a gathering place for this opportunity. its inevitable that they would lose their identity; its evolution. change creates adaptation.
