Not enough closure in the story. I didn't feel it was right for the chief to end up spending the rest of eternity floating in space after all he's given to the universe.
What would you expect humanity to give him?
Notice that the only acknowledgment of John at the end of H3 is in graffiti. The ONI wasn't very open about the Spartan II program because the less people knew about the Spartans, the more god-like humanity might imagine them to be, which is why "Spartans never die" was such a success. On top of that, how would you describe to the public that your super soldiers are in fact, kidnapped children?
Even more, consider John. He's the one that said no soldier should be honored for doing what is expected of him. John is a Spartan II, he's expected to do the impossible. He would probably have looked at that 117 on the rear of that pelican and had been disappointed with whoever made it.
I didn't mean like medals or public displays of appreciation in is honour or anything like that, just simply that it is a bit rough having him float in space possibly never to be found.
I agree that he is a fighter and war is the only thing he's ever known so he probably wouldn't live a civvie life, but would it have been so bad to have an ending where he makes it back to our galaxy, and then is given a corvette or something similar by Half-jaw to search for the traces of remaining spartans, ie those trapped in the shield world.
