It is said in the books that John heard the air pop away from his armor once his energy shield engaged. This causes quite an issue, how do the Spartans breath? We know from "Cole Protocol"
that the suits have enough space to allow for sixty to ninety minutes of oxygen in a vacuum.

Assuming that the shields are always on how do the Spartans stay in their armor for more than ninety minutes?

(Sorry I can't get any quotes since I don't have my books at school with me.)

"Only the Fallen are Heroes, while the ones who still stand are villains"

If you notice almost every helmet has filters on them. They are essentially gas masks as well. So the filters bring in air for them.

They have filters on their helmets to breathe.

You guys aren't understanding what I'm saying. It is said in the books that John hears a pop as the air is pushed away from his suit. This implies that there is no air directly touching his armor. If there is no air touching his armor how can they breath?

I would assume that Spartans would turn off their shields when theres no combat, because that would be a huge waste of energy to keep them on all the time.

That is the only thing I can think of, however, that doesn't seem very safe at all. That would also mean that any mission they go on cannot go on longer than ninety minutes.

If the suit designers were smart they would have implemented something similar to an alternator on a car. This would ensure that the battery would not lose charge.

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

It was mentioned during Halseys testing of the Mk V in TFoR that the shield strength can be altered in specific places to improve the Spartans interaction with particular objects. Example: Making the shields thinner at the palms for easy grip of weapons and making them thinner on the soles of their boots so that they do not slide around.

Perhaps air can circulate through these -and maybe other- inconspicuous areas?

I can't think of an answer better than this, however, it would seem putting the filters on the helmet wouldn't be the best idea then.

2 very small low-0 shielded areas on the jawline of the helmet.
It's theoretically feasible, but creates a massive weakspot on the head region in terms of the shield (not much of an issue for a SPARTAN in the first place, unless they're in a game). Also, UNSC understanding of shield tech isn't great so I'm not sure they'd have enough capability to make 'low shielded' areas like this, it may be too complex.

However, regarding my old shield theory (how it is an EMF containing an electrically-altered region of particles that can coalesce into a hyper-dense region when taking an impact), then there is another theory.
The air popping away from the armour is the field being generated - the shield 'particles' are on the surface from the armour, forming a dense barrier and moving away until the electromagnetic field reaches its furthest distance from the armour.
Then, the particles stabilise and diffuse inside the field, until they equally spread amongst themselves - at this point, air and other gases are possibly able to move between the 'particles' that make up the shield, and make it to the filters on the helmet.
When underwater or in vacuum, the suit goes to vacuum protocol, and fully seals itself including the helmet filters.

That is possible Yeash. It just seems how it was worded that it isn't possible for them to breath.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Energy Shields only become active when a shoot impacts. When it's not taking shots or anything, the Shield remains in ''stand by'', acting like if werent even activated.

Some can come away from reading "War and Peace" thinking it a simple adventure story, while others can read the ingredients on a gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.

What? That quote doesn't imply air can't pass through shields.

When the Johns energy shield burst(expanded and dissipated), it displaced some air with the sudden force. Air itself can still pass through the energy shield.

I am...whimsical today.

Less effective shielding of the head could explain the effectiveness of headshots?

Truth: "My Dreadnought cannot rise!"

Stuckey: "It's cool, dude. We have pills for that here"

The book meant the air OUTSIDE of his suit, as in the air around the suit pops when the shield is activated.

  • 11.14.2010 5:22 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

I think that when they say "the air popped," it just mean that it crackled with the energy from the shields. Although you still bring up a perplexing question as to whether shields are breathable.

This is not true. The energy shields are always active.

Have you ever played Mass Effect? Because that's how their shields work.

Halo shields are constant, but I agree with the theory of weakening the shield to allow air through somehow.

They cover the whole body. The Spartans can just thin the shields out for my grip in those areas.

No, the shielding is variable on those areas, to allow for better traction, and to hold weapons.

They can be boosted from 'a hair under a millimetre' to full strength depending on the environment, such as 0G, landmines etc...

  • 11.15.2010 12:39 PM PDT

Nothing to see here, move along.

Good question. Maybe air can pass through the shields like Agustus said, but then that raises the question of how air can pass through the shields but plasma, which is basically a super heated gas, can not.

Hmmmm, perplexing.
