So, uh.. Can anyone remember any epic moments on their first playthrough?
Very much so!
The closing cutscene of PoA is a phenomenally shot sequence with some dazzling displays and Marty's intense music. It's also just about the only descent from space in the series that really has dissarray and urgency to it, and it really succeeds in putting weight to the whole "you're falling in a tin can as the human force drops in flames" thing. Not knowing what's going to follow, that uncertainty, is amazing. It really sets up the incredible almost-emptiness that follows.
Dropping onto the island beach. With each prior level, Bungie had allowed us to get our bearings. Now, at the start of a bold, new day on Halo with the sun low on the horizon, we get dropped on the beach right in front of a group of Covenant... when you see the needler and AR fire being exchanged between grunts and the other dropship, just how awesome the next 60 seconds are going to be sets in.
Pretty much everything about 343 Guilty Spark.
While the introduction of the flood is brilliant and creepy, Bungie didn't send off all their scare ammunition then and there; in the 1-day structure presented by the last 7 levels of the game, 343 Guilty Spark is only the dusk, and the Keyes Blob is Bungie's way of reminding a first-time player that the night is darkest before the dawn. Which of course leads into...
...the dawn itself. "And the Horse you Rode in on." The last time we saw the ship, it was zooming overhead. Now, we fly in over a dead and broken but beautiful expansive landscape to see the Pillar of Autumn in its crashed condition. Wow.
And the Maw Run, with the ending cutscene. A full and complete action with a satisfying resolution.
Yep, Halo 1 is full of VERY memorable high points.
I even still remember the first things I did when I popped in that Halo disc, 104 (holy crap, it seems so short when I put it like that!) months ago. I stared at the title screen for a bit. Then, I went on split-screen multiplayer and, with my second controller, looked around on Battle Creek and Sidewinder.
