A lot of cursing and confusion, that first room where the doors opened one by one, the first time I played I ran around frantically.

Edit: I loved 343 Guilty Spark, the level was designed great I thought (still think). The confusion between the UNSC and the Covenant as the Flood outbreak starts was awesome. Racing through the hallways and trying to escape.

I remember, that one holo-bridge that was broken and kept phasing on and off...only got passed that once before...never again.

I was annoyed by them. They kept on taking over dead bodies that I started cursing...

Soon to be breaking news:

US Coast Guard prepares for massive rescue mission after Iranian fleet sinks off shore. Reports say a small thunderstorm caused most of the ships to simply...fall apart.

"Oh, this isn't so bad. They pop when they touch you."

*later*

"Oh, this isn't so bad. They can't carry weapons."

*later*

"Oh god, oh god! *screaming*"

Man, the first time I played that level, I got lost for 2 hours.

The first time I faced them was Sacred Icon.

I was really kinda nervous and creeped out when the infection forms kept flooding that first room, but the AR handled them decently.

But the lead-up, with all the Covie blood and stuff, set the stage really nicely, so the infection forms had me worried. But once past that, I was like......these things couldn't possibly have dismembered the Covie like that.

Then began the run-n-gun through the Library trying to get out, that was scary at times, rounding corners and bam! Combat form in your face.

Loved the flood in CE. They lost their scary in the other games.

A lot of it had to do with Bungie effectively playing on imagination and fears of the unknown, I think. In HCE, they never showed much (such as the actual process of infection) explicity, but hinted at stuff constantly, and so your imagination is let to just run wild.

Contrast with Halo 3, where we get to see a hilariously goofy twitching animation followed by an obvious model swap. Even had it been well executed, it's too explicit to be scared by. Horrified, maybe. But it can't tap into that raw fear.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

I was lost in that level for hours. There was a lot of screaming, firing at shadows and any real or imagined sound. I spent quite a while crouched in a corner going "ohmygodohmygod is it over is it over". Needless to say Bungie did an impressive job of scaring the -blam!- out of a 12 year old.

Good points. I think that music played a pivotal role in inducing that fear. Do you remember CE's scary Flood theme?
