This old beta thread shows us some of the problems that the MA37 (Reach AR) has.

It is too weak with the new, lower rate of fire.

The current number of rounds to kill is 18-20. That, along with the slow ROF and new melee system, makes the AR an unviable choice for CQB (Close Quarters Battle- meaning short range). You'd be better off meleeing with the DMR and getting the insta-kill headshot.

At Medium range it still loses out to most, if not all weapons because of it's long kill time.

This can be remedied somewhat, by increasing the damage of each single round, putting it at 16 to kill. That way the AR could get 2 perfect kills without reloading, which never happens anyway, but would help increase it's offensive power and balance it with other weapons. It would still be the underdog, but skilled players who know how to burst fire, and feather the AR would once again feel like god's own anti-SOBs.

EDIT: It already kills with 18 rounds- and it feels like it shoots hot popcorn. If it gets upgraded to 16 rounds to kill it would be perfect.

The AR ALWAYS MISSES AT LEAST ONE BULLET. So it would be very hard to kill 2 guys, and if someone does that, they damn well deserve it (Since they would have to hit each and every round).

By putting it down to 16, you would just upgrade the effectiveness of bursts, rewarding skill with an iconic Halo weapon.


Even in campaign on higher dificulties it is very weak.

Do you agree with this change?

This thread here just goes to prove that the community agrees that the AR is preety much useless at the moment.

This change needs to be implemented.

Increasing the damage per round so that the AR kills in 16 shots.

The magasine size increase would be a way to help players who start shooting earlier, but the more skilled option is to increase the individual round's damage, rewarding marksmanship more.

I tend not to use the AR but when I do I tend to burst fire, so I would really appreciate the greater damage seeing as you have to empty nearly the entire clip to take someone out. Assuming of course you are missing a normal amount of shots.

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

We cant have it too powerful though, then everyone would spawn with a power weapon that kills easy. I'd like it too have a few more rounds but I doubt that will happen.

It's too underpowered yes..One magazine = One kill,its IMPOSSIBLE to survive in a 1 vs 2-4 people battle with the AR,you can with the DMR barely,but you can surive with the DMR but not the ALMIGHTY assault rifle..Look back in halo 1? It was über-powerfull back then..

No. Because of the new melee system even the smallest ammount of shielding will absorb the hit- denying you the kill.

With increased damage, rushing (AR Beatdown) would be technicaly possible, like it is as is, but not a very good strategy.

The Halo 3 AR was the beast in my oppinion, as well as in the oppinion's of many I know.

However, people complained about AR Beatdowns dominating- the technique called "Rushing" was overused.

This was repaired with the new melee system (Which I am not fond of- I believe putting melee at 75% only in MP would have been better).

But what I don't get is why the AR was even further weakened with the lower damage per round (It was already low to begin with) and lower rate of fire.

I'm going to try to do this without sounding like a complaining little child, but I find that AR is my worst weapon. I have far more deaths than kills with this weapon and the K/D rate on it is embarrassing. At first I thought burst-firing would help, but it didn't change anything. The battles still went "see guy, run at guy shooting, get punched while punching". If I was lucky we both died. Most of the time I died and my opponent simply walked away. I have recently found it much more effective to pull out the handgun from the start of the match and just charge people while they pepper me with bullets. I punch them once and headshot them for the kill and I win pretty regularly this way.

TL;DR, The AR is completely useless to me in Multiplayer Matchmaking. Looks like it'll be a few years before I Onyx out that trigger man commendation.

That's the problem. At the moment the AR feels like it's shooting popcorn. It sounds like a killing machine, but sure as hell doesen't feel like it.

Reducing the number by just 2 rounds wouldn't hurt. In fact it would be helpfull :)
