I just finished it and it was so much better than that Contact Harvest -blam!-. People on here were advising me not to even start it.

  • 11.16.2010 9:34 PM PDT

I don't care. I really don't.

Really? I thought it was really good. Gave Arby a backround, Kyes some extra and a good old bunch of Spartan action. Chapters were really short, but that's what made it east to read if you don't have much time to do so.

  • 11.16.2010 9:38 PM PDT

The main reason I advise people against Cole Protocol is because it's the novel with the least relevance to the main games. Sure, you can argue that its story is more interesting than the one in Contact Harvest, but Harvest was much more relevant in that it detailed the beginning of that whole "Human-Covenant War" thing.

The only thing i didn't like was how the whole Sangheili honor system seemed extrememly exaggerated.

Have you ever looked at Sparta/Fuedal Japan? Those are what it's based off, and those some intense honour systems.

"It is done. By my hands. The pyrrhic solution is ignited. All I have left is the quiet of space to lull me to sleep.
I will dream of you." - The Didact

I've come to the conclusion that it's due to the lack of mystery. The other books discussed the forerunners: The enigmatic advanced civilization that disappeared. Cole Protocol doesn't really talk about that at all. . .neither does Halo: Reach. . .

That's what I have thought too. Halo has always been about the mysterious Forerunners. That's the main reason why I thought that Halo Reach's and ODST's stories weren't so interesting. Same goes with Cole Protocol.

Dunno. Maybe a lack of SPARTAN action?

Harvest was good because of Johnson. But he seemed alot more serious in the book though.

Oh hey there

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

I really enjoyed all of the novels/stories. Except The Flood, the author tried to make waaay too many references to the fact that this was based on a video game.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

I love it, it was really entertaining, but it has absolutly nothing to do with the game canon.

yeah, but I always thought of Elites as awesome ALIENS. I didn't want them to be space samurai that committed suicide once they stubbed their -blam!- toe!

I lol'd. :P

In all fairness though, I do not think all Elites think the same way. There are many different lineages, perhaps with many different customs and beliefs. Not every country on Earth is is the same, eh? If the Elites are a mono-ethnic, monocultured society, then I seriously doubt that they are, on the whole, honourable at all given some of their attributes.

These beliefs might not be shared among all Elites. Example: Rtas 'Vadum was messed up quite bad on the Infinite Succour mission. He lost half of his face, and almost had his left arm taken off. His blood was pooling on the ground, but he is still alive after it, and in a very high position.

There is also viewpoint as well. Thel is the point of view in The Cole Protocol, so Vadam's traditions, as well as his own interpretations of it, and his own beliefs, will be presented.

I just find it hard to believe that an entire species would follow the same principles.

;)

While Ghosts of Onyx was the best, the Cole Protocol was still pretty good and Keyes is awesome.

I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

I love it because I've wanted to know more about gray team since it was first said that they were too far away to be recalled.

It may not have had a huge impact on the Halo canon, but it did other things which are considerably important, such as showing that Jackals are more of pirates than soldiers and that the Covenant is willing to negotiate with humanity, even if only in an attempt to trick humanity into uncovering the location of Earth. It does a really good job of showing the relationship between the UNSC and the Innies during the Human Covenant war, also.

In the end, I'd classify it as a gap-filler book, rather than a necessary read for anybody who wants to learn about the Halo canon, but I <3'd it.

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

Haven't read it, but I think it sounds better than Contact Harvest. Just started reading the books, this was going to be next. Why DO people hate it?

It tried a little hard to establish the Elites a "Proud Warrior Race Guys."

They hate doctors, damnit! If that wallbangerish plot point had been used to establish Elite culture as unsustainable for all but the warrior castes, this would be A-OKAY. It wasn't, so it just comes off as trying too hard.

Also, sending The Rubble out into deep space was a very interesting plot point and potential H4 sequel hook that never went anywhere.

I like Buckell, though, so I'm hardly pressing to get CP kicked out of continuity.

also gave Arby a name

"I've come to the conclusion that it's due to the lack of mystery. The other books discussed the forerunners: The enigmatic advanced civilization that disappeared. Cole Protocol doesn't really talk about that at all. . .neither does Halo: Reach. . ."

and neither does Fall of Reach, Contact Harvest, ODST, the majority of Halo Comics and-technically-Halo Wars (never got into the mystery part)

All great titles, (Wars being just "good") all nothing to do with the Forerunner mystery. Which isn't even a mystery now.

You want mystery, look to the Precursors.

"Shall we let the Flood consume our holy city? Turn High Charity into another of their wretched hives? No enemy has ever withstood our might. The Flood, too, shall fail."

-Prophet of Truth.

Agree with OP. A lot of people said Contact Harvest was a lot better... but it wasn't. I had to force my self to read the book until Humanity actually met the Covenant. Everything past the first chapter until Humanity meets the Covenant is just boring..... Except for when the Jackals start taking over the ships, and the Covenant side of the books.

Cole Protocol kept me reading. From the beginning all the way to the end was suspenseful and full of action. However, the book should have been renamed to The Rubble, as there actually was nothing related to the Cole Protocol other than deleting NAV data.

There were so many twists, and it did get a little confusing at times. Also, I couldn't really see the Arbiter do what he does in the book. He seems like a calm type of Elite. Of course, this could just be that he lost his shipmaster rank.

I also could not stop laughing at what happens to Benifacio.

It's like reading Shakespeare (when compared to the other books in the series). Well written and easily the most boring thing you could ever read.

I've always thought it was the second best book after First Strike. Books that focus too much on the human side bores me after a while (First Strike mainly took place in Covie environments).

I don't like how it was written. Example: Plasma Grenades being called Stickies. That was just slang from players and I don't think it should have been in the books.

Well most readers suggest books that best relate to the Halo Game and Cole Protocol has a broader view from the game, so that's probably why.

Was this in dialog? If so, then it was most certainly warranted. Regular use in exposition might get tedious if used in the wrong way.
