Ever wonder if simulants would ever make it into Halo 2? Well I have, and others have too, but ever since the original Halo 2 FAQ was created more than a year ago, the topic has not been discussed. Weird? Yep. The inclusion of bots into a game has made tremendous impact, not only on sales but also on plain enjoyment. While some companies have implemented poorly configured simulants that seem to enjoy mindlessly running around rather than actually playing, those that are properly coded can often make or break a game's general success on the shelves. One title that stands out from the crowd is Rareware's Perfect Dark for the Nintendo 64 console. While the single-player missions definitely had replay value, the one thing that kept players going for hours on end has got to be the addition of simulants and the myriad of options provided to gamers. It is simple to see how this can easily add hours of enjoyment onto a game, long after the game is released. A few years after Halo 2 is completed and the players willing to join a CTF game on Xbox Live has dwindled, bots can make a ho-hum 2vs2 match into a 8vs8 fragfest of glory, no matter how many players were available. But what is Bungie's stand on this? Unfortunately, the outlook is not very good. On the Halo 2 FAQ, when asked if bots will be available, they have said, "We have not made a final decision regarding bots yet. The team has heard the cries of fans and we're exploring ways to make multiplayer games more enjoyable for gamers with only 2 controllers and no Live access." Obviously they know there is desire for bots, but even after more than a year after this FAQ was created, the question has not been answered. Repeated attempts to find an answer from within Bungie has been met with vagaries and misdirection. Does this mean they are trying to keep it a surprise, or simply do not want to disappoint fans just yet? Either way, time has not yet run out. No definite completion date for Halo 2 has been offered, and I believe the time spent on properly implementing bots would be returned exponentially in the form of increased fan base, enjoyment, and profit. It is a win-win situation all around. So I encourage you, write to Bungie, requesting that bots be put into the game. Let not this opportunity pass, for now our voice can be heard the loudest. Semper Fi.
