Subject: I just realized something about the Assault Rifle.

Why does it have no sights? That's a very stupid design. It has no sights in any of the games. I mean sure there's a HUD with a reticle, but what if an EMP goes off? I would much rather have sights than an ammo counter.

Looking at this picture, I would say that the electronic display is attached via a rail on the barrel, much like the M4.

It is there because most soldiers and marines have a helmet with a HUD. It could probably by slid off and replaced by more traditional sights.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

It has no scope because it is a spray weapon and at the ranges where you need a scope, the AR is useless any way.

  • 11.17.2010 12:52 PM PDT

Not a scope, sights. SIGHTS. There's a difference.

You're talking about a weapon from a video game with super soldiers and aliens. I think we can forgive the designers for not creating weapon designs from a practical perspective.

That little optic thing above the barrel might be an advanced version of today's Peq 16.

The Peq 16 is a little device that works as a multi-function offering a laser,a flashlight, a UV lasers, and a UV flashlight. Both the UV laser and UV flashlight are invisible to the human eye, but can be seen with modern night vision goggles (NVG's).

It's not far fetched to assume that the little optic on the front of the Ma5 series rifle functions with the eye pieces that the UNSC puts on each of their troopers helmets.

That device (Ma5 version) might be EMP resistant, just as MJOLNIR armor is EMP resistant, which would justify not having iron sights on the rifle.

Every soldier in the game has a chip implanted into their brain that allows them to have the crosshairs/reticle in the game.

However, the Spartans get a much more advanced version.

^^

I love these threads. Glowing hammer that can manipulate gravity? Fine. Double-barreled shotguns that reload by... erm, twisting them? Makes sense to me. Wait... the Assault rifle doesn't have sights? Oh my god, this weapon is so stupid!

That there is your reason. It's an eye-ball, medium-range burst and spray weapon. Most (I emphasize MOST, not all) Shotguns dont have sights either. Why? Cuz at that range, sights are prettymuch a moot point anyways.

Think of the AR as a Shotgun, shooting individual pellets at a rapid rate, and each pellet happens to be HELLA-HUGE. But the range, spread, and relative damage is comparable by nature.

The HUD link up is a possibility, yes. But it just makes more sense...why doesn't it have sights or a scope? Cuz at that range...you DON'T really need it....

A 7.62x51 bullet can be shot with deadly accuracy up to 300 meters, and a shotguns blast isn't something that's only effective up to 10 feet in front of you.

The in-game mechanics do not accurately reflect the Halo Universe, and this discussion is more about the Universe than the Games.

Probably a good reason for that is because its has to do with the flow of the game, me I don't want to always scope in when the weapon doesn't even shoot that far, its not suppose to. Thats my opinion.

Hmm, I did not know that.

From Halopedia:
The MA5B has concealed iron sights, although not seen in gameplay. It is used by Marines and other personnel with improper equipment to uploading a targeting reticule to the user's Heads Up Display or Neural Interface.
Although not seen during gameplay, the MA5C has concealed iron sights used by UNSC servicemen with the improper equipment to up-link a targeting reticule to the user's neural interface.

I would assume other MA5s have that too, especially since the MA37 page on Halopedia is quite small compared to the C and B.

This. Also the iron Sights may be kind of retractable. Maybe they can pop out the top.

They are retractable, did you even bother to look at my post above yours?
Probably the only reason why Bungie came up with this is because of the people whining that the AR doesn't have iron sights...

I once heard an old man say " Years ago, i sold my trumpet for something to eat, and know i know it would be better to die of hunger."

I upload a ton of Halo clips on my YouTube channel, feel free to subscribe.

Well, in the books the AR has pop up sites. Just not in the game because the reticle can already be seen through uplink with the visor.

I'm pretty sure it either has concieled Iron Sights, or the Marines/Troopers have neural implants of some sort.

My favorite group.

I'd rather have an ammo counter. It can count a little faster than I can.

  • 11.18.2010 9:42 AM PDT

Well Spartans have Heads up Displays, and I'm almost certain Marines have those neural implants that let them 'see' a display. I think anyway. Because Capt. Keyes had a neural plant but I seriously doubt it was just for blowing up the Autumn...

Honestly, if an EMP went off the last thing a Spartan would worry about is aiming their weapons while they're crumpling under the weight of a half ton of armor.
