Does the colour of a Spartan's armor in the Halo 'verse mean anything aside from personal preference?

As far as I can tell most if not all model 2 Spartans were a sort of olive/drab colour, which I presume is for base camouflage purposes, but in Reach the model 3 Spartans have various colours to their armour designs.

Does it have some meaning behind it, or it it just based on the preferences of the Spartan?

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

I'm sure all of the Spartans had their armour customized to their specialities or preferences, but wasent fully showed untill now.

Honestly I can see the point of variety in the actual part types; not only would sticking to Master Chief's iconic look and a few minor alterations thereof be boring and ugly as sin, the fact that many privatized companies produce different components to the modular armour system for different purposes and fighting styles makes a decent degree of sense at least for the Spartan III program which had a lot more soldiers and the potential for a great deal more in the future.

The colours, in my opinion, seem a little silly. The green, olive, brown, and black armour colours seem sensible; I'm sure other colours and colour combinations would be too depending on the combat style and environment the Spartan was best suited for. As for red, blue, yellow, things like that, unless their purpose is at least partially to be shock troops or for alien environments where these colours camouflage well it seems to be mostly of symbolic significance, though I couldn't say exactly what that significance would be.

Well, MJOLNIR isn't exactly the most camofauged piece of equipment in the UNSC arsenal (it has a shiny refractive coating). I would say that instead the UNSC is shooting to keep the Spartans visible to raise moral, and incite fear.

"In Tutela pro Tribus!"

90% of the Mjolnir armor (OFFICIAL Mjolnir, anyways) was the classic colour scheme that Master Chief wore. Green with a slight shimmery coating and a Gold or Copper visor.

That was standard issue. If you look at JORGE's armor, it still has that look, all except the yellow of his chest piece, but we know that was a personal modification.

If you look at the timeline, we have:

Spartan-II Project, gets the MARK-IV Mjolnir and (if you read the books) ALL look like MC did in HALO:CE...same armor, that was the standard.

Just before the Fall of Reach, we have the development of the SPI armor which was a MJOLNIR knock-off but still had a Greenish tint to it to help with it's Camo-System, and was the original SPARTAN-III Standard issue, until Alpha Company was wiped out.

We can surmise from HALO: REACH that eventually, ONI:Section3 developed another version of MJOLNIR armor to give to the remaining Spartan-III's and here is where we can get some colour variations (As seen in NOBLE team), possibly to indicate Rank or speciality. HOWEVER, a closer look at the armor of Noble shows that they added their own...personal touches to their gear (Optical attachments, white bands painted around thighs and forearms, CARTER looks like he's re-painted his gear here and there to touch up some spots...note his right forearm...and cmmon, look at what EMILE did to his bloody helmet!

By the time HALO 2 comes around and Master Chief comes home, he is issued the MARK VI armor, and is told that it is the new standard issue. We can assume from this little tidbit, that ALL Spartans (Seeing as the remaining Spartan II survivors were merged with Spartan-III's making one large force of just "Spartans"..note Jorge, an S2 being amongst all S3's in NOBLE Team) ended up taking the Mark VI as the armor...which is that Dark Green Sage with a copper-visor.

Now, thats not to say there weren't a few SPECIALIST armors being tinkered with, but they probably didnt pan out in time. By the time HALO3 is over, the Mark 6 (Along with its colour standard) was the standard.

So...Green armor with gold/copper visor....was the standard.
