This. There originally was no Halo 3. Halo 2 was going to have Halo 3 in it. But Microsoft wanted Halo 3 to be the launch game for the 360, so they told them to cut the game in half and ship what they had for Halo 2.

@ Halo 2 mourners.
You think Microsoft shutting down Halo 2 was bad?
Take a look at how Halo 2 should've been, until Microsoft stepped in with their Golden Shoes, demanding Bungie for a quick and rushed release.I'm pretty sure that's not true. Bungie is in it for the money too you know. There would be no reason that Bungie wouldn't want to make a third installment. Of course there was no Halo 3 when Halo 2 came out, the cart always follows the horse.
I've been thinking, Bungie learned their lesson on H2; never make a game so damned good that nobody wants to play the next installment. If they had made H2 even better they would have had an even harder time selling H3.
Halo 2 went strong for 3-4 years and that was bad for business. Most companies want the latest game to last 2 years tops. Then they sell you the next installment but H2 upset the applecart, it kept going and going and even now it has hurt sales and online playability of Reach because our memories of what we loved are still strong. We tend to compare every Halo installment with H2.
They will not make that mistake again.
