And here I was going to curl up with a Dickens novel this rainy afternoon. No matter.

Awsome article, Frankie. Brought tears to my eyes. Maybe.

It's been one heck of a year. Let us know if any of you guys are going out to MOJAVE. They're cooking up a sandstorm, I hear.

Thanks again for the games, guys.

Happy B-Day Halo 2

Wow what a post took me a while to read it. I had to waste all my money on a hdtv because my old tv's pixels were all messed up. im going to have to wait a while so I can save enough money to buy a xbox 360.

And again happy b-day halo 2

I was almost positive yall were gonna put real time lights back in and all that stuff, I dont see why this wouldnt have been the perfect time to throw all that old stuff back in (you still have a copy of the old engine dont you?) I mean sure it would take a ton of recalibrating and the such, but I figured that would be your "project", guess not. It really is a shame though that halo 2 had so much more to it that no one will ever know about (to its full extent).

Cool update, I'm a little dissapointed I was wrong though.

Hm, but Halo 2 HAS dynamic lights. Both in multiplayer and single player. If you were expecting the lightmaps to be replaced entirely by dynamic lighting, though, I'm not sure why you thought that would happen.

If I'm not mistaken, the old E3 2003 demo had dynamic lights all the time (I think). And just to clarify now, dynamic lights is like the lights that come from the lights in Zanzibar (from the hanging lamps) and in the level "Oracle", they are "real time" from what I understand, and display the shadow exactly as if it was under a real light. (correct me if I am wrong here). The reason why I thought this would happen was because of the Zanzibar Beach Video from the Multiplayer Map Pack that had dynamic lighting all the time, sorta like the sun was a giant light from Zanzibar. If I'm not mistaken, they took this out originally because it was to much for a 64mb xbox to handle (thats why in the E3 demo they used dev kits with 128mb RAM among other reasons). I also heard rumors of them actually having a xbox light on fire because they tried to make it run with this lighting and the thing just overloaded. So it made sense if they were gonna have to go back, and patch the game to get it to work on the xbox 360, then why not patch every level and other necessary code to work with dynamic lights in all areas. Since they now had a much more powerful system and were working on a project (close to right before xbox 360 was released and right after the announcement of backwards compatibility) it seemed to me like a very possible fit.

Frankie If you can confirm I was right about my facts it would be much appreciated.... Also would like to know if that rumor is true.

Hey Bungie!!!!!!! Read this!!!!!!!

Tell everyone involved with Halo 1 & 2 THANK YOU! Of course, money is important...however all of you have gone beyond the means of making a profit and created a product that makes the consumer feel appreciated. The Halo world is an accolade to those who appreciate an intelligent story, superior graphics and tremendous game play. Excellent work!

Can anyone comment on if the 360 has an internal scaler? I mean, is it upscaling the resolution of the game internally, then outputs it to the TV?

Oh, happy birthday Halo 2! Going to EB games at midnight a year ago is among my fondest memories.

From what I understand the 360 does native 720p for MOST games and 1080i for a few. But the 360 has a built in scaler that will scale these res to whatever you ask for.
So you really don't have to worry about ANY of it. Just tell it what you want.
If you have a standard tv then set it to 480i.
If you have an HD {Like mine} that does not do 720p then set the output to 1080i.
OR let your tv scale it for you. ESPN puts out 720p only. And my tv scales it to 1080i...and it look every bit at good as the 1080 channles do. :)
And I think ALL HDTVs can scale.
In other words "No Worries". ;)

Yeah Happy birthday halo 2 way to go! I just noticed something about the pictures in metropolis, in one photo it's the same exact scene but in the 480p sarge and the marine on the left both have pouches on their belts but in the 720p picture they do not. Can anyone tell me why is that?

Oh yeah before I forget, also can someone tell me if the Pop-in Graphics problem is fixed when playing halo 2 on the xbox 360 please?

And I have played Halo 2 everyday for this one year. And if I couldn't one day, I would give myself an extra dosage the next day.

We love you Bungie.

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

These feels like a semi-appropriate place for it, so im gonna go over my most memorable live game.
It was multiflag ctf on coagulation, 4 vs 4. My team scored a point, and put the score at 1 to 0. And then for some reasosn two of my teammates, possibly in a party, both quit the game. This left me with the one other guy, who honestly wasnt that great, against the 4 opponents. We proceeded therefore to follow the most logical course of action, and camp the base with some shottys. And thats basically how the rest of the gme went, i died maybe once, and the other team got seriously owned. Im not sure why they couldnt beat us, they didnt do too well to say the least.

This may sound pretty boring, but you weren't there to see the carnage of them trying to get that flag

Good, informative post...thanks.

The reason I ask is that I have a Samsung DLP that has scaling issues with two known games and Halo 2 happens to be one of them. Even though 480p games require very little scaling, Halo 2 has split second lag on my TV. I just wonder if the internal scaler within the 360 will eliminate this problem. Anyway, enough of this....Happy Birfday Halo 2!!!

It has seemed like such a long year with all that has been going on with the game such as new maps, playlist updates, tweaks to the multiplayer experience, and probalbly the only flaw was the different ways of cheating.

However, it also seems knd of like a year that went by fast. It seems like yesterday when about at this very same time, I actually turned off my XBOX after hours and hours of playing Halo 2. I remember I skipped school and played from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. I seriously played NONSTOP for 12 hours and after I was done my eyes were all blurry and I fell in love with the game. In fact, an hour after I stopped playing for the first time, I began playing again. I couldn't put the controller down on that first week.

Happy birthday Halo 2 and THANKS FOR A YEAR OF MEMORIES!

Happy B-Day Bungie!

As for the HD goodness:
Great job, but I am kind of disappointed to see that the screen is still stretched. When you guys hinted at making Halo look better, I thought for sure you would do away with the annoying stretched screen in HD.
