What is the point of it? We've all seen, I'm sure, Jun's little fake ghillie hood on his chest plate. Why?

It won't keep him camouflaged - there's not enough to conceal his armour. It won't keep him warm - the MJOLNIR PAA will do that for him. It's not a hood - I doubt it'd fit over the MJOLNIR helmet, plus it would be pointless and limit the range of movement of his head. And serve neither of the two above points, which would be the only reason to use it as a hood.

All it does is drape over the back of his chest plate, and partially obscure the magnetic clip designed for rifle-sized weapons, and also the access panel for the fusion reactor.

It's as if Bungie felt that people wouldn't recognise him as a sniper without a ghillie suit that isn't even a ghillie. What, a Helmet entitled Scout, which has a 'Remote Sensor Package' upgrade (often described as a 'favourite of sniper units'), a sniper-rifle-round-carrying shoulder piece, and the big blam-off sniper rifle he carries wasn't enough to convince people of that?

It's just so horrendously pointless, I would love to know people's ideas for its existence. It serves no purpose whatsoever.
To me, it seems to have been put in so people could claim to be snipers because they had 'ghillie suits'. It's not even a suit, it's a shawl. That's ALL it is.

I was thinking the same thing, maybe he thought it made him look like a bad-ass? I think they put it in so it's easy to see he has something to do with sniping/camoflauging, even if the sniper in his hand doesn't give it away.

It's the only explanation I can think of, but it'd be as pointless as Jorge's canister (which I believe is supposed to be an early UNSC shield generator) being filled with milk.

It doesn't camouflage him, and it won't keep him warm. It's purely aesthetic, and pointless aesthetic at that. Imagine if his little shawl got caught in his helmet seal?

Nail effectively hit on the head.
I'm sure the conversation went something like this:

"Hey, let's make this guy a sniper."

"Well, just let him carry around a sniper rifle all the time."

"No, that's too obvious. Let's give him a hood and extra ammo strapped to a bandoleer like this was the Old West."

"Okay, but that isn't subtle. Not to mention the fact that I highly doubt such ineffective camo would be used by super soldiers outfitted in power armor with the ability to cloak themselves to near-invisibility."

<pause>
"Shut up."

"But isn't it sort of like beating it into the player's head that this guy is a sniper? Isn't that just bad writing and character development?"

"That's the point! And we'll also make it so the players can purchase the hood in the armory if they want to be a cool sniper too! Yeah, this idea is flawless."

"...whatever you say, boss."

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

I don't know what you're talking about Yeash, all I see is an empty field.

My post is blank?

Basically, I'm asking if anyone has a thought as to what purpose Jun's ghillie shawl on his chest piece serves, except to inform us that he was a sniper.

It makes just as much sense as soldiers being hit by plasma in the the face and walking it off.

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

Just another reason to hate Jun and his weak gillie.

Also Yeash I think Dibbs meant he can't see Jun cuz he's so well camouflaged.

Some can come away from reading "War and Peace" thinking it a simple adventure story, while others can read the ingredients on a gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.

Does everything have to have a practical point? Your nitpicking, and looking way too much into it.

The extra rounds definitely serve an obvious purpose, and the "suit" is just there for the looks. No need to rant about it.

I can see the inspiration for the GUNGNIR helmet now.

At least with some ghillie actually on his helmet, that makes slightly more sense, since when sniping, prone, the only part the enemy would see would be camouflaged with foliage. Plus, he looks infinitely more badass.

If Bungie could add armours - I want that helmet.Posted by: Spartan1065

The word 'field' did confuse me, but I didn't get the reference.

We have a winner.

I agree that the scrap of ghillie material hanging off his back is laughable in terms of a practical use but, I don't know, it makes for a cool looking piece of armor I guess.

I think you may be in the wrong place. Let me direct you to the Halo:Reach Forum. With it's endless list of enticing topics such as "bungei r dumd" to "mastr cheif iz nobel six", you will no doubt find the intellectual stimulation and agreeable denizens you are longing for!

probably just to nail in the fact that he is indeed the units designated marksman, that he has a link to todays professional soldiers and so that he is more recognizable as a sniper, even if the sniper rounds on his shoulder (which is completely pointless because ammunition is held internally in the MJOLNIRS leg plates) and the large sniper on his back, people may just see him as a spartan that favors a large rifle over a smaller weapon, but the ghillie hood makes it obvious he is nobles guardian angel of sorts.

This actually makes complete sense. I don't think a majority of Bungie's fanbase would have been able to put two and two together unless Jun had some form of ghillie material (no matter how small) stuck somewhere on his body. They put forth so much effort in making absolutely sure we understood and here we are being under-appreciative. For shame.

Founder of the Brotherhood of Sierra Group and Clan. I tend to remain fairly mature on the forums, but I absolutely hate those who constantly barrage the Reach forum with AL- and Bloom-type threads. Don't play CoD, but I respect it.

Sniper's tend to lay down in the field. This covers what most would see if he were to lay down because you can't cover his head and because it's green and black as it is, it isn't the easiest to see if he's in a good position. All speculation, though, not sure.

Emile's helmet has shock value for psychological warfare, Jun's does not. Jun's does absolutely nothing, but I'm sure a grunt, who is nervous at the best of times, would absolutely blam themselves at the sight of a skull-helmeted 'demon'.

It would personify the dogmatic propaganda associated with the SPARTANS, and the grunts would just keel over before Emile even drew his kukri.

Although his helmet does beg a good question - the EVA helmet was designed to maximise all-round visibility by means of a full-face visor, meaning that the user would not have to physically turn their head to look in most directions (and therefore gyrate off-mission). Emile has fully negated that advantage, by carving over about half of the visor.
Given that the reason he would use the EVA variant himself is for maximum field of vision in close quarters, it is an odd choice.
There is no way he can see out of the scratched portions, the eye holes are incredibly small and are effectively horse blinkers, and portions of his HUD would probably not display well or at all. I imagine he would have to have one eye permanently closed just to see his reticule displayed.
