MY LOVE FOR YOU IS LIKE A TRUCK...

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

I know that the moderators are separate from Bungie, but I assume that they have to have some level of connection, or how else would they get to become a moderator. I was just curious because I read the bnet forums almost every day, just to check on what is being talked about. If a moderator would care to comment on how they became a moderator, feel free; or pm me which is fine too. Thanks....B.B.

How does one become a moderator?

One doesn't. Which means if you want to be a mod you're already disqualified. You have to genuinely care about the community, and not expect any privileges in return.

I never said in my post that I wanted to become a moderator, I only inquired as to how they became them. And if someone doesn't become a moderator, then there wouldn't be any moderators now would there? And I do care about the Halo2 community, and I don't expect anything except to have people take things I say out of context, and then misquote them in a response to me.

That's a tad hypocritical, don't you think? I never directly referred to you either.

As I said, no one becomes a mod with the intention of becoming a mod. Every mod here has just proven themselves trustworthy in Bungie's eyes on way of another and 'poof', modliness.

However, I hear the initiation is another, far more horrifying matter entirely...

what do you find hypocritical? And since you used the word "you" which is a non-definitive pronoun, it can mean me or anyone else. So since you responded to my post, I figured that when you used the word "you" naturally you were talking to me. And that is what I wanted to know, that Bungie picks the moderators. I just wasn't sure since Bungie constantly says that they are separate from the moderators. Kinda like church and state.

Relax. It's the stock answer for this kind of question. It get asked an awful lot as I'm sure you're aware. No need to try and complicate things.

The ninjas are not in Bungie's employ in a business sense. They technically work for Bungie, but its more like volunteer work. The church and state metaphor isn't quite fitting, because the ninjas don't have their own agendas. They are just like every other member in the sense that they (usually) don't learn any information or news before we do and they don't follow any routines or schedules. They are essentially regular members with a ban button, because they have proven themselves trustworthy and intelligent enough to wield it.

The only exception used to be Shishka.

well hypocrite is a very powerful word, one that you used, and I asked about. That's fine though. On to the point, if Bungie selects the people who are moderators, then they seem more entwined then they suggest. So, if I understand you correctly, a person just posts on Bnet and then eventually Bungie contacts them, maybe with Ed McMann and big plastic check, and asks them to be moderators? That seems to be a rather interesting way of selecting people to take care of their website.

They don't 'take care' of the website per se, Achronos and the web team does that. The ninjas are just here to give the community little nudges in the right direction when it veers off the path, if you take my meaning. They are the caretakers of the community, not the website, and that is something they do willingly. It is the same with any online forum, but since this is a company forum, one that is now a property of a major corporation, its rules need to be that much tighter.

Point conceded. The moderators "moderate" Bnet forum traffic, which is what I meant by taking care of the of the website. I understand Achronos' role is different then the other moderators. Hence he has a different title then the normal "forum ninja's". I was just curious to maybe hear from a moderator what their actual experience was when they became a moderator. Just curiosity above everything else.

Feh, you won't get anything out of them but a bunch of cryptic references to an abduction, some mysterious island, and hazy recollections of an initiation ritual that may or may not have involved hippos.

hmmm...hippos, I'll keep that in mind the next time I am interrogating someone. But it does seem that they (the moderators) don't have a clear answer for most questions, which is why I posted this on here instead of pm'ing them and asking. But since I am thinking of it, how do you know that Bungie selects the moderators and thats how they become them, you never actually said how you were aware of this.

...whoa, what was I doing? The answer to your question is clearly homogeneous.

Oh, a dark tale...

But anyway, besides the over baring figure of a thug whacking me over the head, I've never seen a Bungie employee in person. And I've never talked to an actual Bungie employee, other than the disembodied soul that hangs outside my cell.

It looks like a great deal, until it happens.

Does the disembodied soul have a name, or will it not let you tell me it's name? But did a Bungie employee contact you about becoming a moderator, or did someone else "tap" you? As in another moderator? Thanks for replying. B.B.

what is wrong with a thread like this? I just posed a simple question, and I was curious to get a reply. Isn't that what the forums are about, asking questions and then getting answers?

Why should there be no more legit questions? Show me where it openly states how moderators are appointed and what they do, and I will agree with you.

That is what my query dealt with, I have never seen an absolute definition of the process. Now I'm not asking to become one...I just curious of the process. And I was just curious to see if a moderator would reply and tell about their experience. I just trying to get a feel for the people that are in charge of B.net forums. Simple curiosity.

  • 11.10.2005 4:11 AM PDT

Moderators are just Bungie fans that have been deemed honest and trusted by the other moderators and Bungie staff. SketchFactor, a Bungie employee, contacted us through the handy-dandy PM system to ask us if we would like to become a moderator.

Well, I guess that's that. Not much to it. Just follow the rules and respect the other members of the community and you never know what might happen.
