I am confused on which weapon the Covenant use to Glass planets.

At first I didn't really know what they did.

After Halo 3, I concluded they use those "beams"

After reading the books, I think they shoot large Plasma Torpedoes onto the planet which create shock waves of heat.

After Reach, where I see both, i am confused.

However - many people in this forum believe they use the Energy Projector weapon. However, this is used in the books as a ship-to-ship weapon and described as having between a 'silver-white' and 'pure-white' beam.
Glassing beams have been seen as variations of red, orange and purple.

Not to mention, glassing beams are mounted exclusively on the underside of amidships, in what appears to be a purpose-built glassing beam cannon. This only fires downwards, with variations of a few degrees in shot angle.
Energy Projectors are fired from rotating turrets on the upper fore, and would not be able to point directly down to fire on a planet's surface, unless they decided to fly upside down, which they don't.

Energy projector=glassing beam, I think you mean plasma torpedoes, which the smaller ships without energy projectors use.

I heard they use a form of super heated, compressed plasma?

I don't think you actually read my reasoning as to why the two are not the same, and how I did not once mention plasma torpedoes.

At any rate, if an energy projector is a glassing beam, then glassing beams are at least a different model to energy projectors - EPs are used in ship-to-ship combat and mounted in turrets.
GBs are mounted exclusively on the ventral amidships of warships, and can only fire downwards in a conical field of fire, and have a radically different appearance to how energy projectors for ship-to-ship combat are described.

Nowhere does it say that EPs only face down, the reason that is assumed is because they have only been seen in game when glassing. Also only the plasma torpedoes are fired from rotating turrets, not EPs. As for the ship to ship combat, the difference is probably due to lack of atmosphere of that then have a different 'setting' for glassing (such as a wider, slower stream).

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

I think I agree with Yeash. The Energy Projector = Excavation Beam (or Glassing Beam) seems to be a misconception.

As for their approach to glassing, when in orbit the plasma originates from their lateral lines, which is also where plasma torpedoes come from. Fred at the beginning of FS also notes this; a plasma torpedo was fired and caused a massive explosion on the horizon.

The excavation beam seems to be used for, well, digging basically. Maybe used to destroy underground fortifications perhaps, and to excavate Forerunner goodies. So I think it would be a concentrated beam (for vaporising rock), but does not result in huge area of effect damage.

An explanation for the varying colors of Plasma, the Covenant heats them to different temperature for different effects,
like the hottest to cut through the hull of a ship and so forth, but this is my theory and I think it is valid and should be further discussed.
