It would have actually been a decent movie if it actually followed the rules set by the other series, and even followed the continuity of the Predator movies. For example, in 2, we saw that the U.S. Government had a vested interest in the Predators and their technology, so how was it that some rich yuppie beat them to the punch?
Because they wanted to include something from the alien franchise. The company, Weyland industries, is the company, WeylandYutani, that is in most of the Alien movies. And Lance Hendrikson (the old Weyland guy from the movie) also played Bishop in the 3rd and 4th Alien movies. So they let you assume the Bishop model was modeled after him (although in the 3rd Alien movie it shows the man who it actually is modeled after, so it was kind of stupid).
I suppose they could argue that Weyland cloned himself over and over and kept running the company.
But Weyland played no significant role in the movie short of buying everyone off. Would it have made much difference if some other yuppie did it? No. Did the film explain how Weyland Industries gained an upperhand in space technology from alien technology? No. It made no impact on the movie whatsoever to include Weyland, except that I laughed my ass off when the Pred put him in his place.
I would have been happy if what they included from the Alien franchise instead would have been the fact that there's a little bit of time that passes between infection and chest explosion, (instead of the 30 seconds or so that the humans had) much like how the last Pred's timeline went ;)
