Subject: I wonder what New York looks like in the Halo universe...

Seeing as cities in frickin Kenya are as big as metroplitian regions such as New York or Tokyo makes my chin drop when I think about. If it was South Africa it would be kinda logic, but oh well. This means there must have been a major expansion for the world, both economically and in terms of culture, and that they may have solved all the problems in Africa in the future.

So seeing as this totally random city in Africa, New Mombasa, looks like a damn megapolis. Same goes with New Alexandria. If a city on a far outer colony is this advanced, then I don't know what to say. Imagine how big New York or Tokyo must be!

Any thoughts?

New Mombasa is a tether city, which caused a massive boom for it during the spacefaring era. New Alexandria also has space elevators. Cities farther away from the equator probably haven't grown nearly as much.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

My guess is that New York or Tokyo would not be that much bigger than a city like New Mombasa or New Alexandria. As the world became more closely linked the cities in underdeveloped areas would grow, but the cities in developed areas would not necessarily become much larger. For example, 50 years ago Shanghai was nothing all that special, but now it is a huge, modern city. New York has not expanded just because Shanghai did.

Also remember that New Mombasa has one of the orbital elevators. This makes it a major hub of activity since the elevators are such a big deal. New Alexandria is the largest city on the most important inner colony. (Reach is not some "far outer colony" it is the UNSC military stronghold.

Good points. But I strongly believe there must have been a certain technologial advance in New York, for example new and fresh skyscrapers in the centre of the city. It's been over 500 years...

I agree on the space elevator part. Also, both New Mombasa and New Alexandria have important ONI facilities, I didn't think of that earlier. Defining Reach as a far outer colony is a little wrong, yes. But what I meant by that is that it's very far away from Earth and it must've been a complex job to transport all the tons of building material to the planet, and not to mention the job of terraforming the planet. I think it has been inhabited properly for somewhere around 120 years, I'm not sure of exactly how long terraforming of such a large planet must take.

Just good to see that the African life's getting better in the future.

Is say that the brooklyn bridge and the empire state building would no longer exist...instead a massive "new empire state" building would take the place of where the old one was...
I just don't think the brooklyn bridge would make it.

The statue of liberty would probably still be there though

I think New York would look like a New Mombasa, without the fact its in Africa.

Signatures are for squares.

In Contact Harvest Johnson says that Chicago takes up five states.

I'm assume New York is just as large as Chicago.

This makes me curious, why did they make a Space Tether in New Mombasa? I know it was close to or on the equator, but why not in a larger city area?

On a related note, ******'s mom has really nice boobs, and it doesn't take much booze or encouragement to get her to let the puppies out of the pen...if you know what I mean...

Some can come away from reading "War and Peace" thinking it a simple adventure story, while others can read the ingredients on a gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.

This.

Already NY doesn't have much room to expand on Manhattan, so instead it'll spread outwards Chicago did.

Maybe Kenya found oil and naturally became a financial centre of the world, like Singapore.

I'd love to see the E3 2003 New Mombassa style ressurected in canon once more.

For those not in the know, it's a massive skyscrapped-city. As in, the city IS the skyscrapper.

What a waste....

Burned and glassy.

Maybe they built the tether in africa because there was nothing to tear down..if they built it in a big city they would have to make room for it...

Imagine tokyo though no offense but they are already stacked like sardines..i mean damn they already sleep in coffin like tiny 6 feet by 2 feet rooms in hotels..and mostly everyone lives in tiny one bedroom studios 4 feet by 4 feet!!! What's gonna happen with those guys haha!?!?

  • 11.21.2010 5:28 PM PDT

Tethers have to be near the equator. Even modern day Mombassa is kinda pushing it, since it's not quite on the equator.

This makes me think - do the humans in the Halo universe face the same sorts of problems that we face today?
