We need to have some sort of initiation forcing people to read the damn things... I'm sick to death of being having to tell people not to do things and subsequently being accused of being a "Wannabe mod".

Any ideas?

Gawd Gaara, calm down. You know that no matter how hard you try to enforce the rules, they just wont listen to you. The only members they actually listen to and are somewhat afraid of are mod's, specially Impurity on his bad day. Why do you think I stopped telling people the rules, they just dont listen. Best thing to do is to tell the mod's and to not get agrivated. Sorry if I sounded rude.

...if there were no drunkards, we today, would have no hobos...and the world would be a boring place.

I hate it when people post in the incorrect forum and you tell them which one it should go to. Their reaction is usually like this: "OMG shut up, you modzorz wannabe."

Even though not much can be done to ensure that new members read the rules, you might want to want the video in my sig for a laugh.

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

Thing is...if Bungie put the things up where you have to accept the Code of Conduct. And it lists the entire list. People will click submit and not even read. So the best...and possible for the Mods...way to deal with that is to ban people who violate Bungie rules. Then own them when the poor kid tries to say he did nothing wrong and then the Mod shows him the Code of Conduct and that he is wrong then Shiska comes in and teabags him.

Gaara no matter how hard you try, some people will just never get it. If they call you a wannabe mod, so be it. That just means that you're telling them the right thing. If they don't want to follow your suggestions, than that's their problem.

It doesn't hurt trying, and sometimes the people that I tell are thankful. Most of the time they aren't, but the few that are keep me doing what I do on this site. I pray one day the people who don't know what they are talking about will shut up, listen to those who know what they are talking about, and act like they've known whatever they've been told.

dude that was funny video. and helpful. skip to the last two paragraphs if you're not a big reader.

indeed there is no bridge between the mods and the commoners; its the governing system that is somewhat flawed.

this community is most like primitive tribal councils...that have been abandoned the minute a lack of respect arises. like now.

so then you see several levels of moderators in each chapter, with the more common ones having less power, and one or two sharing ultimate power. time tested and true, in the middle ages. you might see this in a lot of chapters these days...but its really not a good system as far as the community goals are concerned...too much restriction and favoritism.

then you have the Western Civ approach- one ultimate mod, several hundred lesser ones, and then a dozen or so middle mods, all with different powers form each other. you might recognize this as the american political system, or the greek, or the roman. it works, or at least has worked, for the last two thousand years.

or there is the old dictatorship, with one mod having ultimate power, and having a handful of henchmen underneath him to take care of things. that would be most unfortunate.

but the mods here do well. im sure they have schedules and whatnot to make sure someone is on at all times...but i think the truth is they cant catch everything. and with the maturity level in here, that is costly, on a small and insignificant level. like kids not respecting their elders...the elders of this community whine amongst themselves.

perhaps a solution could be figured out. the karma system administered by moderators would be nice for that...with extremely high positive ratings gaining certain powers...or at least the power of respect. the community would probably be that much better for it.

just a thought.

I think it's a good idea, but it will most likely not help as much as you would want. While some newer members may pay attention to what they are reading, I'm sure there are many that will think the list is too long for them to take the time to read when they just want to go to The Underground and tell everybody about how they found some sort of skull while playing Halo 2...

The best way to avoid being called a "mod wannabe" is to not post to tell somebody that a rule has been broken and rather contact a moderator about the broken rule. I use to tell people when they were breaking a rule way back when, but I noticed that the since I had the role of "Member" on the forums, the member that I had told about the violation didn't feel the need to follow the rules. I gave up doing that, and started contacting the moderators about the rule violation since they had the ability to do something about it. We are pretty accessible through Gmail/Google Talk at [email]bnetmods@gmail.com[/email]. Some of us also have other IM services, and we all have the ability to read PMs sent to us.

Before I was a mod, I used to get that all the time. I even bookmarked a thread where two idiots were flaming me for about two pages, but I can't get it out, seeing as though I'm on a different computer.

Dude... just deal with it. If people complain about you being a wanna-be mod, then they suck. Maybe it's better to provoke them so that we can sort the idiots from the rest.

-TGP-

PS. Maybe that sounds a bit harsh, but I did get it all the time.

as do I, you don't have to deal with it anymore. I have been told countless times to F. off for being a "poser moderator" or "wannabe mod" "or mod's pet" or my favorite" a -blamed!- up piec of -BLam!- who should rot in -blam!-"

of course that last one may have been my fault, also is that last one blamed out? i wasn't sure

Only the paranoid will survive!

I find that I tend to agree with those who call people "wannabe mods" most of the time. I often see something like this in a "wrong-forum" thread-

"Well I think that the Halo 1 pistol should be in Halo 3 because... blah blah... pistol -blam!-... cookies... blah..."

"This goes in [insert forum here]. Read the rules."

Now I often correct people, but I hardly ever get called a wannabe mod. If you correct them in a rude way then of course they aren't going to like you. Don't make it sound like you're better then them, don't make it sound like the mods like you more. You're all members, so don't act like a mod. I would have said something like-

"I disagree. I think that... blah blah... overpowered... just my opinion.

Also, this forum is for [insert description]. I think that this type of discussion goes in [insert forum]. Just a heads up."

yoo•zel- ('yoo-zhul): slang: vb.

Officium quod Fidelitas.

The idea has been brought up and I know Sketch has mentioned how he likes the World of Warcraft / Blizzard forums because you have to see/read the rules each time before you post on the boards.

I'm totally for a system that would make people pay attention to the rules or at least be aware of them. But since Bungie is slaving over a new game, updates to Bungie.net will come slowly. But I have a feeling that when/if the Karma System comes out, rules will not be taken lightly.

  • 11.11.2005 9:01 AM PDT

You can't force stupid people to read the stickies at the top, sadly...but, you can point out their errors, and if they don't listen...well, it's not your fault if they get blacklisted.

I think there should be a little "Posting Rules" legend underneath the 'quote, cancel, preview' and 'submit' buttons when you're making your post. It'll sure help.

Hmmm. The only Idea I have is to make it go to a page with the Rules on it instead of providing a link, that may work. Personally, I just joined tonight and I clicked on the link and read all the rules, along with a bunch of articles on Bungie.net and Bungie's Backround. I can see how most would not though. There is no real way to force people to read or follow rules, but forcing them to see it may make some take the effort.
