Subject: How Did The Pillar Of Autum Get On Reach's Surface?

Escalators don't break, they just become stairs.

When playing through the campaign, I wondered, how did the Pillar Of Autum get onto the surface of Reach intact if isn't supposed to be able to fly in atmosphere? One of my therories are that the PoA joined together with some frigates at hard points like Gettysburg and Acendent Justice in First Strike. The frigates could have helped add to the Pillar Of Autum's power to slowly bring it down. Another theory I thought of which probably isn't the truth, but what if they did a short range/ in atmosphere slipspace jump. Remember how Adrmiral Cole sent calculations to Reach for AIs to process for an in atmosphere slipspace jump? Maybe ONI wanted test it out on a real ship? They would choose the Pillar Of Autum for the test because even though they are different models, they are both in the cruiser class with similar slipspace drives. It would also explain why the PoA is in the middle of nowhere. If the jump did work, then you wouldn't want to deystroy anything in the aftermath of the jump so just in case they had it in the middle of nowhere? Both of these are just my theories on how the Pillar Of Autum is on Reach's surface. A therory on how those rocket things came into existence is that like everything else on the PoA like the reactor and MAC gun is brand new tech so maybe the jets are sparkling new too. Just my opinion on this topic. Also, post your own therories for this issue. I also don't mind critism on my own therories so feel free to correct me or change my thereies.Another thing, if you think there is an awesomer ship than the Pillar Of Autum or the Forerunner Dreadnought -which I doubt it:)-, than post its name and class. Ex.- Midsummer Night Steath Frigate.

Message me if you want, I will try to get back as soon as possible.

See you on the forums and in the games.

I'm almost 100% sure that almost all ships that size have thrusters and other things to allow them to be in, and enter, atmosphere. Slipspace jump in atmosphere is a definite no, in my opinion. Also it would be easier to read this if you used paragraphs.

Human slipspace jumps could be off by millions of kilometers. They wouldn't have any chance of such a precise jump (especially without an AI).

"well it was reffited before it was on reach chances are it was replated to be able to go into in athsmosphere cause the jump jets were placed so it could lift off, perhaps it had help by other frigates to get their but the frigates whent off to fight covenant?" what i posted before just so others can see it aswell

with this perhaps it's possible for halchyon cruisers to go into athsmospere but it would cause to much damage or something so it wasnt premitted, and if true why would keyes go to reach then if his ship would blow up well halsey his wife or partner (mirandas their kid) said they have something important he needed to have to chnage the war then by God he would listen

Only Frigates are capable of atmosphere flights ( By unknown means. ) However it is possible that ONI simply lied to confuse he Covenant or the Pillar of Autumn was able to enter with refits. ( I doubt this, since it weighs 4 times as much as a Frigate. )

Brains beats brawn get used to it

Fear the Red Comet

Variety is the spice of life.
Long live games.
Death to all fanboys.

It was probably just "tugged" there by another ship or several.

I highly doubt that the way canon has gone now with Halo Reach that the Autumn ever even left Reach to participate in the space battle. The bonus content (Keyes' message) at the back of the reissued Fall of Reach suggested that the Autumn was still undergoing its refit while Reach's defenses were still falling around them. It makes far more sense that long before the attack ever started the Autumn was selected as the ideal ship for Red Flag, and was tugged down into Reach's atmosphere for its refit.

Edit: I should also clarify, the specific reason why I say this is because in Keyes' message he mentions that he is still unaware of the complete nature of Red Flag, and no Spartans have yet to even step foot onto the Autumn, though he suspects they'll be arriving soon enough.

( I doubt this, since it weighs 4 times as much as a Frigate. )

It's about 2.4 times as long as a frigate, a lot bulkier, and it's notable for its insane internal honeycombed support structure. It probably weighs at least 10 times as much as a typical frigate, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were more like 20. Even 2.4^3 is like 14.

So yeah, it's really heavy and not built for atmospheric action.

It would have to have been one heck of a tugging operation!

Escalators don't break, they just become stairs.

Even if the Pillar Of Autum didn't do a slipspacejump, it still got an AI from its overhaul. I'm not sure what it's name si but in the Fall Of Reach, a bridge officer is talking about insted of no AIs they are going to have 2-Cortana and the other one.

I also thought of something. I didn't take into account of the Pillar of Autum's weight even before the overhaul. After the overhaul, they had put in lots of support structures to keep it together and they are carrying tons of archer missles because they covered an entire side of the ship with them.

Also, sorry about not using paragraphs.

I AM STEUDTE And I love the USAF and Elites.

They had to fix it up before they went on the original mission they where on before reach came under attack Halo Reach kinda mixed the story up a little.

  • 11.23.2010 7:57 AM PDT

Yeah I'm pretty sure they suited it up on Reach so it would have puffed its way there via thrusters.

  • 11.23.2010 8:02 AM PDT

I am alpha, i am omega.

I am the last of the primes.

Before the war started, the unsc was on the brink of getting anti gravity, (they already had some prototypes), fast forward 30 years and gaining tech from the covies, it's highly possibe that ships used anti gravity and bottem thrusters to keep them afloat on a planet.

  • 11.23.2010 8:58 AM PDT

I don't care. I really don't.

What he said. And we know the Autmun had this because if you play the first level of CE, you won't be rotating (the only other known method for gravity in space), and yet most other UNSC ships had rotating sections.

This could be true, like at the end of "tip of the spear" why did that destroyed human frigate fall so slowly?

also to the original post, it's spelled "theories", not "therories". lol

The canon mass is ~100,000 tons, or 25 times the mass of a frigate. Of course that's still absurdly light and gives it a density less than aerogel and just slightly more than air.

That 100 thousand tons is Nylund retconning himself. I don't think he had a real chance in GOO to retcon the mass of a frigate, but even he will know it's wrong.

I think that it could possibly be moved to atmosphere very slowly but I wonder why it wasn't on some orbital shipyard. Why spend so much fuel to get on the surface and then back to space?

Even if humans had more accurate slipspace drives the ship would probably have been ripped apart by all the forces that the slispace jump to atmosphere generates. (I am not 100% sure that are human ships strong enough to sustain such forces)

How is that a retcon? It's always been the mass of a cruiser, and is several orders of magnitude to low.

Sorry about spelling errors in the original post. The anti-gravity method does make sense considering they had been fighting covies for decades so they probably salvaged technology from deystroyed ships. For example, on prowlers, they have their own version of something like a pulse lazer turret on them.

This would also explain like Venator82 said about no roatating sections on the Pillar Of Autum in game. But like I said before, I just wish they would make a book or another encyclapedia with the specifics.

One last thing, ferrrari, could you post where you got the prototype information from. Thanks in advance.

Uhm...well, at the end of the Pillar of Autumn level we can see some rockets attached under the Autumn. Said rockets where used by the Autumn in order to Lift off; maybe this same rockets where used by the Autumn in order to make a "soft" land into Reach, but given the mass of the Autumn, we can´t be certain.

The most awesome ship in the UNSC fleet?; I don´t know, I love the CPV-Phoenix Class, however I have to say it would be either one of this:

UNSC - Point of No Return. Stealth Corvette/Prowler.
UNSC - Unnamed ship in the short "The Package". Stealth Corvette/Prowler

The U.E.S.C. Marathon emblem that appears on my profile was designed by me and picked by Bungie [Bungie All-Star competition] to be available for use by anyone on the Bungie forums.
"Yours to manipulate, to destroy and rebuild"

The Pillar of Autumn had pretty much a full army of soldiers, weapons, pelicans, tanks etc. fitted within it.

Assumably it takes a long time to get all the troops inside a ship that large, if it was in space it the docking would take even longer.

It might have landed to help evacuate soldiers from glassing.

"Question. Which Spartan is best?"
"That's a ridiculous question."
"False. Master Chief."
"Well, that's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought."
"Spartans shoot Sangheili. Spartans. Sangheili.....Battle Star Galactica."
