What message boards have you been to? I've seen female mods do fine.
Too many to count, and I’ve administered my fair share as well. Normally, I am of the opinion that gender on the internet does not matter, but this is my exception:
The problem, nine times out of ten, is that an administrator will pick somebody to be a mod just because she happens to be female, and it looks to be a good gimmick. The problem is, that the proportion of people who make decent moderators is relatively low, and apply that ratio to that the low number of female posters, and it’s a real rarity that you will find a female that will be an acceptable mod.
In my years of experience, a female moderator is far more likely to go out of bounds, because it looks cute for them to do so. It starts with small things, like editing a member’s post to say something completely out of the context of which the poster wished to say. And it just degrades from there as the female moderator in question is inevitably challenged by the member base, and then the member base is challenged by the female’s fanboys, and so on and so forth.
The truth, however, is in the numbers. There is no female moderator at B.net yet because there is no female member yet qualified for the job.
