Subject: What was Halo 2 like before the Title Update?

This is being thrown around the Reach forum quite a bit now, and, no doubt, it is leaving the members who didn't play Halo 2 Online (like me) a little confused. What exactly made Halo 2 so bad before the update and what it the update rectify?

It was awhile since I've played, but it wasn't bad before some updates, it was still an awsome game. They just fixed some things.

So Halo 2 was never "bad" IMO, it just got better.

It wasn't bad but they fixed the long sword lunges and sword flying in general. I think they also tweaked the BR spread and put a little more stopping power in the pistol but I'm not sure about that one. Joe Campbell might know more about that one.

Halo 2 for Life!

As long as you avoided ranked games, it was fine. Actually the custom games were way more fun back than because we spent so many hours perfecting sword lunges. Good times.

In case I am talking about something completely different from you, I'm sorry.

Halo 2 when it first came out was a little different game then it was in 2005, 06 and 07. Matchmaking was awful. The only playlists were Team Training, Team Skirmish, Big Team Battle, Rumble Pit and Head to Head. There wasn't even a real Team Slayer it was a playlist in the others. As far as actual gameplay though the biggest change i noticed was to the pistol. The original Halo 2 pistol wasn't a terrible gun. It wasn't the primary gun like in Halo 1 but dual wielded pistols could usually beat a Battle Rifle in a battle.

Basically they tweak a few things for balancing issues. Since they can already update the playlists without doing a full on update, i don't expect many changes.

Actually Rumble Pit didn't comeout until the summer after release. Rumble Preview was released right after Team Slayer. Original playlists were Big Team Battle, Team Skirmish, and Head to Head, and Team Training (I think).

The original title update fixed a lot of issues with matchmaking, hosts, and several exploited glitches. Although Halo 2 will forever be known for its "glitches," Bungie did patch some of the original ones. I cannot say exactly what the first title update did as I didn't start playing Halo 2 online until July 2005.

Oh that's right, I forgot about the hosting and other connection problems. Live was new and had bugs and people got pissed but at leasst you could play a game with a guy from Australia and a girl from Germany.

The first updates were pretty good, overall. And then the maps started coming....

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

The Melee attack also received a much needed upgrade in terms of damage. Giving birth to the nasty jumping melee attacks!

Dual Magnums were nerfed and the Brute Shot became twice as powerful as before.

Halo 2 was AWESOME before the first title update...

Then they patched rocket/sword flying, ghosting and all that stuff that made it fun :(

Agreed so I'm glad I still have an original box without the update so at least I can still swordfly.

For the people who have bought 360's after the servers shut down and do not have the H2 updates you can still swordlunge, swordfly and all the other good stuff.

Halo 2 for Life!

You could use a sword and a sniper to lunge across maps. Legends started to form about peoples abilities to glitch the game (lots of glitches were only know by a few). Heavy modding and button combos occur way latter. At this point in Halo2's history was dominated by stand bye'ers. Lots of myths occured about getting host and that if you were the first person or group into a room you were going to be host.

Latter on we learned how to (after update) listen to our xbox's to see if a new map was being downloded from our xbox, if it did we would back out (we had back out tricks for lobbies) as it would be a map where modding wasn't detected at that time so modders would use their mods on those maps (if no noise than it was coming off the disk and it was ok).

Clans actually had meaning.

Friends lists were heavily used not like the current XBL system that sucks! The new interface is very frustrating compared to the old Xbox XBL for H2 which was simple and clean.

Their is really to much to say here. But it brought vehicle game play into combat FPS so effectivly it has not been recreated (not even by Hreach or H3!), MP was fun, and enjoyment in working as a team to overcome another team was so cool, stratigy was nessary not just kill i.e. H3/Hreach. Killing actually ment something for the movement of the flags or bombs or vehicle movement on the maps, not like now.

I could probably go on forever about this stuff lol.

Totallymassive, you're awesome :D! Finally someone else who enjoyed Halo 2 as much as me and know all the good stuff! And yeah, I miss sword flying badly!

If you couldn't get a legit 50 in H3 then you suck so bad You're opinion is null to me.

If you think my Reach K/D is bad, it's because I play the one playlist that requires 2 hands to win in.

If you think you're better than me, 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 me. And we'll see what happens ;).

but this is all you need to know about me

The increase in melee damage was the biggest update.

  • 11.28.2010 12:16 PM PDT

Don't forget they increased the ground splash damage of plasma's so that they could kill someone that was close to the explosion and not just hurt them.

Halo 2 for Life!

Yeah they tweaked the grenades. Do you remmember what they did to the human grenade? I think they made it slightly more powerful...
