The U.E.S.C. Marathon emblem that appears on my profile was designed by me and picked by Bungie [Bungie All-Star competition] to be available for use by anyone on the Bungie forums.
"Yours to manipulate, to destroy and rebuild"
I'm playing Marathon (1) again after around 10 years, and I gotta say, it's amazing! I'm actually getting hooked up to the storyline and campaign like a drug. Halo: Reach was far from this in grabbing my attention.
Stories aside, the Marathon (campaign) gameplay is actually alot more fun then Reach. You have alot of enemies and every single weapon you acquire seems new and can help you get through different situations. I have not encountered a single glitch during the whole game (apart from trapping myself into a room, and I did that on purpose - 'yea right').
The graphics may not be the most beautiful around, but I wouldnt call them 'bearable', they are actually pretty good and do their job and it allows for the feeling of coming around to new areas and all the enemies are unique too.
The main thing about Marathon vs. reach is that instead of just dropping you out to a large open field as a goal to kill every single enemy in the area, you have tunnels, rooms, large space areas, quarantine zones etc. You have alot of puzzles and switches to flip which really makes the game exciting. Every single room you enter seems like a new area and you have to be alert for enemies at all times. In Reach... You have this big open field and one enemy across it. You feel like you are untop of the situation at all times.
In Marathon, I'm actually scared all the time, you never know when an enemy is gonna strike and you have to be alert, it's a really exciting thing that the entire Halo: Series has not been able to offer me.
The Reason I'm not comparing the Halo: Trilogy as much, is that atleast for Halo 1-2 you had similiar types of surroundings, the Library in Halo 1... Halo 2 as well... And you had levels like the first Arbiter level in the gas mines with interesting rooms and tunnels to explore. In Halo 3 you had "The ark" mission which pretty much brought back the same feeling as in the previous Halo games.
I'm 'not' even going to mention how much the Pillar of Autumn resemblems the U.E.S.C. Marathon...
Honestly, what happened, Bungie games in my opinion (campaign wise) are in a downwards spiral. We are just being spoonfed with simple missions where you are never lost and have an "X" amount of enemies to kill.
Are the players getting so bad that Bungie needs to make simple games for them to get their appraisal?
