Man, I've always wondered... Why is everybody except the moderators an ass on B.net?
I mean c'mon people look at this forum. It has a LOT of members and needs more mods to keep people in line. The other day I saw someone make 3 polls about whether or not you like chicken. Smart? I think not. The bad thing is, is that he's still out there and never got blacklisted. Look at HIH, why is that place SO much better? It's because they have rules. Rules that people actually follow. Now think of a Double post free, rare flame, nice forum with enough mods to keep it in line. Seems better huh? I know flamers will come to this, and I know double posters will come to this, but if a Moderator does... consider this post.

Bungie.net has rules. People don't follow them. Making posts like this really doesn't help out either, since you're not actually suggesting anything to benefit the forums.

Why is HIH "so much better"? Well, I imagine because it doesn't have to put up with over a million and a half users, a noticeable portion of which are just out to cause trouble. The moderators do their very best but they can't be everywhere at once.

The Bungie online team has even taken extra measures to counter spam (the anti-spam filter) but nothing anyone here can do will be able to eliminate the problem. The best thing to do is just ignore it, do your best to promote and participate in good discussion, and report offenders to the moderators. One of our biggest problems is members complaining about the problems yet doing nothing to help out themselves. Find posts which are decent enough, post decent replies, hopefully doing so will encourage others to follow suite. That's the best we can do, and it can work.

I get the feeling that you are also asking that we be more strict and that would help.

That would be correct. If I saw someone get there ass pwned for posting something spamtacular, I wouldn't do it.

Everyone here is guilty of flaming somebody at some time or another. Even me. I just flamed someone for no more reason than they set themselves up for it. So once in a while, perfectly good members can degenerate into flamers. I'm sure all of you have done it. Oh, and as for the flame, it actually was pretty good. Here

Ok, the whole problem with having forums and such is that being anonymous will always bring out the worst in people. Why? Because you have a mask to hide behind and that’s incentive to act as dumb as you can. But the option comes down is whether you want to be a good member, an average poster or a complete moron, you make your own destiny on the forums.

Bungie.net does have a small list of issues that need to be dealt with, but it is up to the Moderators but it is also up to the members to help out. We are people too, we have lives, we aren’t paid, we do this on our free time… we can’t be here at every waking hour, though I wouldn’t doubt that at times. So we do rely on people who email, message us or alert us any number of ways. In an ideal world we could have a perfectly clean forum, but we do rely on the efforts of the Moderators and the community, can’t have one without the other.

As Recon did say, we are rather lenient, some Moderators more so than others. We do our best to give people a fair shot at shaping up before they are put to death, but some people never take the hint. Bungie.net has progressed a lot… originally we had only three Moderators who couldn’t even Blacklist people… now we have a great team watching the forums who do so with very little direction. We realize people get away with a lot, but if we really buckled down, we could probably cut the forum population in half and never allow anyone to post. How fun would that be?

As for HIH, I do believe Psyched pointed out that they are not dealing with the vast majority of the Bungie/Halo community. Trust me, we could just clone Shishka and set them loose… before you even typed a stupid thing you’d be gone. But we’re doing the best we can and the forums have come a long way. Achronos is buckling down and I was recently talking to Sketch about how they are tossing around ideas. Heck, Bungie does check out the Septagon for site feedback, you never know when something might catch their eye.

So make the best of it. Psyched made a very valid point yet again… lead by example. Post good topics, think before you respond/post, just do the best you can be a good member. In the end you’ll contribute more than the moronic jackass that will most likely end up Blacklisted soon enough.

Wow, that was good that guy got owned.

As for Recon,
I don't wanna be a mean ass who everyone hates, I just think that the mods need to be more strict and more mean to people that deserve it. I mean, it's fun to have fun right? But when you see someone post something so stupid it ,makes retards look smart, it's hard not to be mad. Example: The 5000 symptoms of a Halo maniac thread. It's dumb, but entertaining, but when someone posts something like; "I'm going to bed", or "I like chicken", or "w00t, I found my car in a sink!", it makes you wonder: "What the hell are these guys doing?" Sometimes it surprises me about how many retards are in the world.

Well Mr12, we cannot read every forum post/reply. We search out the bad ones and we mostly rely on people who go into most topics, read them and then report the bad stuff to us. We'd go crazy if we had to approve/read every single post/topic.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I think this place is alright.

Most people know by now what goes where. Shure people still go off topic all the time, but q quick warning from the mods help.

I dont know of banning every offender of the rules would be the way to go. There would be mass bannings.

Anyways most of the absolutely retarded threads get made in the flood.

OK, OK, point made. I'm not trying to insult the moderators by calling them lazy, but I'm just surprised by the abundancy of dumb people on this forum.

For one, the septagon is really well off. I've only recently switched over, and let me tell you, it's a hundred times better than any of the other forums. Oh, and making the flood forum was a brilliant idea. There are now only a couple spammish off topic threads a day in oh, say new mombasa. Sure, the flood incourages spam, but only in that forum. It's kinda like a trash can. If you don't look at it, you'd never know it was there.

Oh I wasn’t taking it as an insult, I was just saying…

But yeah, Bungie.net does have a vast majority of idiots. Look at the age rage of the game Bungie has put out, it’s population mostly younger/teenaged players/boys. (No offense girls) So when the community goes up, you get all the idiot spewing machines that is known as being a teenager. Just report the morons and we’ll put a cork in their mouth…

As for the forums, yeah… New Mombasa does get sketchy, you just have to know which forums have the better population.

I think i'm standing proof that idiots change. They are not a bad thing, but they usually learn with time, I may have been here for little over four months maybe, but i've changed a lot.
Bungie doesn't need to get more strict on these people, just let them have there fun. But if they flame, or spam, or other things like that, yes they need to be dealt with.

This is an interesting thread. I wish I'd have read it sooner. Many good points have been made.

What you can do as an individual: Post good content. Don't spam. Follow the rules. Essentially, teach by example.

What mods do/can do: It varies from mod to mod, but they're typically pretty forgiving. As long as you don't blatantly spam and flame a ton. It would be unwise for them to seriously crack down on the bnet members. For one reason. Non-conformity. Basically, you try to control people, and they do whatever is in their power to avoid the control.

It is also unethical. You have to have faith in the good of others. Think of it this way. There are a lot of bad people in the world. Murderers, theives, rapists, etc. But does that mean we should just start executing everyone? No. You can't just get rid of everybody. That would ruin, and eventually end, the community. And that'd put Achronos, Sketch, and Frankie out of a job.

Yeah, same here. I got blacklisted once...... went back to the Flood right after my little vacation and realized just how dumb it was there. Sometimes people learn from their mistakes when they finally realized they're making them.

Thanks for the replies; I don't think we should blacklist everyone (although that was an interesting point) I just think that the mods should buckle down, and be more strict so that we can have a better healthy community. People should be nice for the same reason they're mean on these forums... they don't know each other. Don't get me wrong B.net is an O.K. forum, but what if it was an Awesome forum. With that said, it saddens me of the lack of useful posts on it. I only wish that people would post fun, awesome, enjoyable, etc... things, hell this isn't school. Sure we're gonna have a few people who need to get a life, but the number of those people have gone up drastically, and recently. My only wish is that people had another outlet for their stupidity than B.net, and that more posts like the ones collected in this topic would be more abundant around here. You guys are awesome, and have just gained another member of the Septagon community.

And there is another thing you must keep in mind.

Bungie.net is in a slump. Halo 2 has been analyzed so much that there is nothing new left to analyze. Halo 2 is the most discussed thing on bnet. So what I'm saying is, we're running out of things to talk about. So, people make things to talk about. This often takes the form of spamming and flaming, unfortunately.

So, in theory at least, the situation will become better once the next project is announced, and then released. We'll have things to discuss, and there will be an influx of new members.

Some people seem to think this problem can be fixed by getting more Mods or blacklisting more people. But the truth is, more people will come. There are a lot of people in the world, and a lot of those people like Halo or Halo 2. The only way I can see the...less helpful members leaving is if Bungie makes a crappy game. I'm guessing you don't want that, so let's just take the good with the bad.
