Subject: I wish humanity would have lost.

I'm a stubborn guy. I love to argue my opinion, but unlike others, I'll try to see your side of the problem. I'm a triathlete, with a very heavy empephis on the swimming bit. Also, don't hate on the ~Quinton~ at the end of my posts. Why are you still reading this? #creeper #hashtagcashmoney for hashtaging on Bungie.net

We all know about the "Great Schism" that separated the Elites from the rest of the Covenant and was basically the only reason we(humanity) won. I wish Bungie would have just had the Covenant wipe us out as one strong united force. In my opinion it would have been a much better end for Halo, we lost and they won. A strong concluding end. There would be no un-tied ends as there would be nothing to tie.

This way they could also focus on other parts of the Haloverse other than the end of the Human Covenant War.

Am I the only one who thinks this is the way Halo should have ended? Somber and sad but a strong conclusion.

~Quinton~

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I wanted Earth to be destroyed, shame it didn't happen. In Ghosts of Onyx, Halsey states that they could never win the war, only survive it. I really wanted that to happen.

That would be a terrible ending, sorry. The story of Halo is about the survival of humanity, not the destruction of universe.

That's funny, I seem to recall Halo and the Ark being created to destroy all life in the galaxy...

I'm glad you have your absolute interpretation of the purpose of Halo's story, but I think the story has its own ideas.

I think that Halo is about the mystery of the Forerunners, not about humanity surviving.

I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

Halo is about a lot of things, but I agree with the OP. I would have enjoyed a less predictable ending.

OMG Unstoppable odds, and at the end, OMG that was soooo close but humanity prevails! Weee!

Main reason I didn't like how it ended. We are facing unstoppable odds and the poof we win. Yay! Happy cheer cheer. No it was predictable and boring.

I enjoyed the ending. Going into Halo 2 we figured Earth was screwed. We were going to lose. We had nothing left to throw at them.

But by the end of the game we've created a strong alliance with the Elites, an unexpected twist, and it's only thanks to this shaky alliance that Humanity barely survived. Earth is still in shambles, but we survived.

To be fair, the Sangheili only allied with humanity because they'd otherwise have been wiped out. Whitcomb's NOVA bomb wiped out most of the Sangheili fleet at Joyous Exultation.

Humanity is known for exaggeration. I doubt much of Earth was actually destroyed outside of Voi, Cleveland and Cuba.

This is known by the fact that barely anything of Reach was destroyed or glassed, other than all of it's major cities that would have kept it up during the battle against the Covenant.

I think Humans would have survived even if the Elites hadn't allied with them. Even if it cost Earth.

He may have a point. Halo's story is not absolute in its themes. Some could take from it the following:

The proper heir of a lost legacy taking its rightful place from a bunch of megalomaniacal imposters.

The sacrifice of an entire civilisation and its last wishes in preserving Earth and Humanity.

Determinism.

Independence and Ingenuity.

The ethical uncertainty of "Does the ends justify the means?"

Even the Sangheili-Human alliance could be seen as conveying a sense that no matter how fuked up something appears to be it, it can come back. In that case, their honour, atonement, forgiveness, etc.

Had Humanity in fact been wiped out then all of those would have been rendered impertinent, as well as such an outcome sh1tting all over the deeper lore aspects. It is supposed to convey a glimmer of hope through determinism. This is not Warhammer 40k.

I would also say that Doctor Halsey statement of just surviving rather than winning was indeed the outcome. Earth is in ruins with probably every major settlement destroyed. Humanity has no military left, no fleets and the number of colonies left could probably be counted on one hand as opposed to the "hundreds" that apparently existed prior to the war; 23 billion dead.

There is also the Flood as well.

That is a lot like killing every Human on Earth to stop malaria from killing people. The parasite would still exist regardless, although it would no longer claim Human life. So the loose ends of Humanitys birthright, or the Flood, would still be left open if it ended like that.

I dunno, it would seem a bit bland, sort of like "Ah okay; cool story, bro".

  • 11.25.2010 12:27 PM PDT

The ending is fine. Having humanity completely wiped out wouldn't make for a good ending, especially since we just fought for their survival for 3 games.

Yes, because we were lied to when it was stated that only 200,000 million humans are left after the war.

Africa was glassed, Australia was attacked. Antarctica was attacked. The US, Cuba, more than likely the entire world. Even if it wasn't glassed, Truth took his ENTIRE FLEET to Earth.

  • 11.25.2010 12:29 PM PDT

On a related note, ******'s mom has really nice boobs, and it doesn't take much booze or encouragement to get her to let the puppies out of the pen...if you know what I mean...

Af ter helping for so long, I would have been angry.

The population of Earth is 200 million after the war. Not the number of total Human survivors in the galaxy.

What entire fleet? I only remember him bringing less than 50 ships to Earth's surface. Even if he had brought 2000 ships with him, it would take 30 years to glass the entirety of Earth.

I may have not stated that very clearly, what I meant was the plot wasn't just about the destruction of the universe and killing the bad guys, it's also about what I said above and forgiveness (humanity forgiving the elites for their mistake), so therefore the plot was fine as it is.

  • 11.25.2010 12:51 PM PDT

If Rtas Vadum hadn't been there to glass the Flood infested region of Africa, humanity would be quite screwed.

WTF would Truth attack Antartica?

lol possible Stargate reference here

Even if Earth was destroyed, there were quite a few human colonies besides Earth. Most of them were either glassed or abandoned, but there were some that had a good chance of surviving including Mars, Pluto, and some outer colonies including XI Boötis A.

Btw, if humanity hadn't survived, all sentient life forms would've been destroyed once the covenant had activated the halo arrays, which probably would've made for a sour and largely unpopular ending.

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

Yes I wanted my race to be wiped out by crazy over-religious aliens who then commit mass-suicide by activating highly destructive ring worlds not too long after, then everyone dies and the whole universe is bare of life. That sounds like a really happy ending that would make the millions of fans happy who would then proceed to buy games where the ending is everyone dying a horrible death after so many wastefull sacrifices.

we still have a renegade faction of religious fanatics with great technology on the loose...

Too depressing, people wouldn't have liked it. I think they could've made Halo 3 a whole lot more epic than it was, 'cause it was supposed to be the final battle and whatnot, but no I don't think humanity going extinct at the end would fly.

That's right, humanity has nothing at the end of the war. At the end of Reach, Halsey says that with Noble Team's courage they can "rebuild" and thats all humanity could do.
