Subject: I wish humanity would have lost.

When I invest so much time into a series, be it TV, book or game, I usually prefer a happy ending. Spending all that time getting to know characters, motivations; killing them all off seems like a waste.

It doesn't mean the ending can't be tinged with sadness. Sure, humanity survived, but now they only have Earth and 200 million people where they once had dozens of billions.

Almost every single human colony besides earth was obliterated with all hands. We sure as hell did not win, we only "survived". Dozens of planets were glassed.

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

While I prefer the way the story turned out (in regards to what you're talking about, anyway), I've always wanted to read/watch a story where the bad guy wins. You know, Covenant killing Humanity, Reapers destroying all life in the galaxy, etc. I think that's part of the reason I liked 1984 so much - the "bad" guy sort of "won".

Maybe I'm just a cold, sadistic person though.

yeh i agree, i think most players would, after spending many hours playing through the series, want the ending to be "predictable" in a sense....and if you think of all the younger players....it doesnt send that good a message... put in lots of hard work and get deissapointed, not that i care if little kids get dissapointed:P.

I understand though, that an unpredictable ending could habe been a good idea but im glad it ended the way it did.

The covenant was doomend anyway. If it havent been for humanity Truth would have activated the rings and whiped them all out. So in the end, no one would be alive in the univers, expect for the forunners who could be living in a shield world somewhere, and Halsey and the spartans.

What entire fleet? I only remember him bringing less than 50 ships to Earth's surface. Even if he had brought 2000 ships with him, it would take 30 years to glass the entirety of Earth.
He got 30 to the surface, a lot more probably died fighting in orbit. As for "glassing", you took your numbers from the source which states that "glassing" isn't glassing. So the 30 ships just bombarded places to rubble. The same we see New Alexandria look like.

We should know better, because we are better.

I would have really hated a ending where humanity died. That would have really ruined the series for me.
Though there are times when I really wished the bad guy won. Avatar for instance.

Well one of the biggest reasons why Bungie made Humanity win, was because they wanted 343i to continue the Halo Cannon. Also one the biggest reasons why humanity won, was because the Elites joined them after seeing the prophets lies. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

As do I. A cheap tactic, but punching a kid in the sentient species every once and a while can be a sound tactic to eliciting an emotional response when you're low on genuine creativity.

Here is your friendly correction, because that is most certainly not correct. Bungie knew nothing about 343i or what would happen to Halo at their planning of H3. Nor, from what I know, did they want 343i taking it over anyway. I can't speak for the studio as a whole, but I can speak for what I've heard from a few individual members.

Why just follow MC's story, the Halo Universe is so rich, has so many places to go! Why just dwell on one spot? I know I would love a halo game to be about the Forerunner Flood War. What About Harvest? The Suicided Missions of the SIII's. The possibilities are endless. Maybe that is what will happen in Halo 4 if it is ever made. Then we will know that it ended, and we can learn and play how it started.

You look unto me now through the profile screen found at http://www.bungie.net/Account/Profile.aspx. Here we are, mutually faceless, both ones in the Seventh.

Having the Covenant win would be a terrible ending. "Yeah, well after all that valiant fighting and sacrifice... you lost." No, screw that.

Am I the only one who thinks this is the way Halo should have ended? Somber and sad but a strong conclusion.
That wouldn't be a strong conclusion, it would be a gigantic buzz-kill.

You can say Halo 3's ending was predictable, and I say: WELL OF COURSE IT WAS PREDICTABLE. When you boil away the lore, Halo's story arc is well worn mythological archetype. In every culture there are legends of fighting against unstoppable odds and then heroically winning. If the aliens at war with humanity were weak and pitiful, the story would be terrible because there would be no tension or drama.

You never no..... halo:reach might have not been the last halo game..... Bungie said "7 steps to world domination" and they've made 6 halo games..... halo 1,2,3,odst,wars,and Reach.... whos to say the 7th step isn't another halo game? lol

ima try to end this.
If the covenant won, and this has been said, an overreligisized race/alliance would triumph but fire the rings, wich would destroy them cuz there a bit retarded like that. And besides, if master chief were killed before wiping out flood, they'd have to deal with them or wipe them all up, but they might think (im not sure) They'll take the flood with them, which would blow big baboon chunks. In thought, the ending now's for the best, disappointment by humans getting killed doesn't send a good message, the message says: kiss our arses. I dont feel like going that far, im a fan and all...
anyway, disappointment, waisted time. Hated selves, not to mention bungie would get horrible rep and be hated and be forced to fail even if they were still with microsoft. I'm sorry, but the humans win because they're awesome and because they deserved to not be destroyed.

Don't touch the waffle or you'll get BURNT

I got to admit i mean , humanity dieing is pretty sweet (im pretty evil to admit). but to work for the good guys and then all of a sudden the game decides to end it all with these maniacal, stupid, suicidal excuses for intellectual life blowing up all of the universe including themselves WTF i would rage quit and probaly wouldn't want to play any future games cause no matter wht good i do there i know how it all truly ends with a big flippin bang!

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Halo is the struggle of good vs evil. Had the Covenant won, not only would humanity have lost, but so would the entire galaxy. Halo would have been fired. Everyone would have died. Halo is not about the extermination of the human race, it is about the human will to fight on.

Also, I suggest you look through this thread (just the OP, not the flame war comments). It explains that Master Chief is metaphorically the Second Coming of Jesus in many respects. Master Chief is humanity's savior, if the entire game is building up for humanity to be saved, why would we just veer it in the other direction?

Master Chief represents the Second Coming because he died for humanity (or at least they think he did). Am I the only person that thought the final cutscene was like the crucifixion of Christ?

Bungie didn't make Halo Wars.

I think that halo is the ultimate story of sacrifice and perseverance. Its humanities stand against all odds. Is that not what makes it so amazing?? I think the ends is the best fitting one.

I never thought of it that way but then again im not religious but its an interesting idea

I did like the ending, but didn't liked how it was executed. Technically, the end of Halo 2 pretty much tells you that thanks to the alliance with the Elites, humanity will survive.

I didn't liked that the Elites joined the Humans to defeat the Covenant, it felt, in a way, cheap.

But other than that, I liked that humanity survived the Halo trilogy.

No, they joined with humans because, otherwise they would have gone extinction by the Covenant Loyalists.

I agree. I felt like Earth wasn't in danger at all after the alliance.

Now you brought religion into this with a person who has Agnostic/Atheist views. Not only that I am pretty sure that discussion of religion is against forum rules.

I'm not supporting or debating any religious views. That thread simply makes an analogy that supports my reasoning to why humanity should have lived, because it is a metaphor.

I once heard an old man say " Years ago, i sold my trumpet for something to eat, and know i know it would be better to die of hunger."

I upload a ton of Halo clips on my YouTube channel, feel free to subscribe.

That would just be a sad depressing ending. I like the more sophisticated ending of Master Chief, the savior of the universe, is a drift in space until God knows when.
