If you look really close at the "backpack" he's wearing in the cutscene, it says "Re-entry pack" on it. Greatest cop out ever!

I went Underground!

He had a re-entry pack on (you can see it during the cutscenes for long night of solice, and it's what he pulls the pistol out of at the beginning of Exodus.) I don't think it's ever explained how it works, but it apparently saved him.

Does anyone have information on how it works?

is it just a normal jetpack used for decelerating?
or does noble 6 also have the armor locking/gel pad thing master chief had in his armor?

  • 11.26.2010 2:30 AM PDT

Am I supposed to write something funny here?

There was a thread in reach forum where a guy explained how the real-world thing works, but I apparently didn't save it.

Whippin' 'nades since aught-2

Yeah, total copout. This smacks of the hurried, patchy narratives that cripple all of the halo sequels. One of the "wait..., what?" moments.

I don't believe Mark V had the gel layer Mark VI had.

Oh but it did. When Red Team crashes into Reach on the Pelican, They all lock their armor, increasing the pressure of their gel layer to maximum in hopes of surviving the impact.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

Chief had a metal door from a forerunner that he used to re enter the atmosphere. His armor jell took most of the impact.

I think 6's re entry pack deployed some parachutes or something like that except futuristic.

  • 11.26.2010 8:04 AM PDT

What a waste....

I believe Maria uses a re-entry pack when testing the Mark 6. Hers was really big, and covered her legs. She used it as a heat shield, and then it deployed a parachute.

However, Six was tumbling and falling uncontrollably. She may have fell in at then wrong angle and burned up. It was a miracle he/she survived.

I heard someone say once (paraphrasing here) "Multiflag on Blood Gulch with your friends is what makes Halo, Halo." I GUARANTEE that more people agree with that sentiment than "Getting a 50 in MLG is what makes Halo, Halo." - Oboewan42

Tumbling? Six fell pretty straight to m Aside from the light flutter of the legs, it was straight.

If you're reading this, you need to stop stalking me. If you can't stop stalking me, you might as well go here.

See, I wouldn't mind the whole re-entry pack thing had they been less subtle about it.

Nothing like "Oh hey, I'll survive this plunge into Reach's atmosphere thanks to my handy dandy Re-Entry Pack," but more along the lines of Jorge man-handling Six and attaching the pack when he has his back turned, while scanning for enemy contacts.

Six could say something like, "Wait, what are you doing?" Then Jorge could have started with his "I got good news and bad news bit."

As they said above, he used a Re Entry pack, btw if you can get that comic about an armor test with Maria-062; she´s wearing something similar so, maybe the same way she re entered could apply to Six.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

They make mention to it after the first space battle of Long Night of Solace. The Sabre's computer is warning Jorge his Re-Entry Pack is disengaged, hence why he doesn't have one and why Six does.

So here's a question: if the packs somehow protect users from the heat of reentry (as is clearly implied in Reach), then why do ODSTs use drop pods? Why can't they just use reentry packs?

I'm probably over-thinking all that, but meh. In the end, the reentry pack thing is just a very poor explanation by Bungie as to how Six survived. They weren't thinking about how ridiculous that concept really is, since most people aren't seriously into the Halo canon. They knew only a select few players would really care.

If Six had commandeered a Covenant drop pod (they're frequently seen in the games) from the ship, that would have made a lot more sense, and wouldn't have butchered canon. Then again, that wouldn't have made quite such a dramatic, hollywoodized cutscene ending for the mission.

I think it's the combination of the re-entry pack and MJOLNIR armor that's protecting 6 from the heat.

look at the halo: graphic novel the story 'armour testing' (yes i know the spelling is 'armor' in the book, but that is incorrect english) but that shows a SPARTAN-II deploying from low orbit using a simple and humble parachute sort of aparatus.

That's Maria-062.

But that wasn't what 6 used - he either used a hyper-compact version of it, or it was just a jetpack randomly capable of re-entry of a single person. Which is random, and stupid.
