We are determined that before the sun sets on this terrible struggle our flag will be recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom on the one hand and of overwhelming force on the other.

This is a place to discuss and or debate the events that unfolded around the devestating defeat of the UNSC at the hands of the Covenant at and over Reach.

I want to talk about the UNSC manpower on surface, Halo Wiki tells us about 350 million? What do you all think?

I have seen you future

According to the Halo: Reach project page there are slightly more than 350 million (385,421,100) military personnel on Reach.

Unfortunately, all of these troops are pretty much useless once the covenant begin glassing the planet.

It's sourced.

But that's probably all fit adults on the planet, as the entire population is just 700 million.

Based on the TotS opening map, some halopedian military guy's interpretations and the encyclopedia, I got the total size of the Viery forces to be 40000 men.

350 million is the total available military manpower(basically everyone who could be available for military service), not the number of actual people in the military. The US has a number around 150 million, but the the total number of US military personnel is much much lower.

There are supposed to be between 100 and 150 ships in-system at any given time. It is no great stretch of the imagination that there could be 162.

On 30th August, in the old version of canon, there were only around 120 ships in-system at the Battle's beginning.

I wonder if the Covenant saught out any particular item on Reach, mabye the Forrunner object under the ice shelf near Sword Base? They obviously had intrest in the "latchkey" device located by one of Halsey's collegues. I wonder if these ked to anything, the Location of Delta Halo to Regret, or the Ark Portal on Earth? What do you think?

I don't care. I really don't.

The Covenant wanted the Forerunner artifacts in general, such as the complex under CASTLE base.
However they especially wanted the Babd Catha Artifact (the one under Sword) because it is likely that it, much like the object on Sigma Octanus IV, contained the location of Installation 04 (Halo).
The UNSC managed to keep the Covenant from finding tthe coordinates only to have the Autumn lead the Covenant there anyway.

Hmm, thats intersesting, the number is unknown, buy how many troops do you think the Covenant Army had available for Reach?
Millions? Billions? Guesses?

I've got a tale that's never been told. Stick to script and handle your soul. I've got a tale that's never been, never been, never been, never been told.

I'd think that the covenant had several billion if not trillions of troops available to them. They seem to have the superior capabilities everywhere they go, despite the use of Spartans on the ground.

I feel safe to say billions, not trillions, thats, err....

But I wouldn't be surprised to see 2-4 billion covenant troops available for the assault on Reach

I just play for fun. MLG can kiss my ass.

You're right, they were searching for Forerunner objects on Reach. They got the bonus of having TWO such objects on Reach, the Forerunner crystal and the giant structure, whatever that was.

350 million people living on Reach. They weren't all in the military, and they didn't all have guns.

edit: or not, it's aparantly 700 million. Of which 350 are military. I think this is totally stupid.

That 300mil is not all going to be on the ground. Some would probably be stationed on ships. Yet more would be technicians and stuff.

Yes, the battle was a swift one, and a costly battle, what do you think would have happened, if Admiral Witcomb detnated the NOVA bomb on Reach? Would Trouths Jiralhanae-led Fleet of 500 made its way to Earth and decimated its defenses? What would have happened at Reach, we would have lost SPARTAN-IIs or what?

Well, if he did set off the bomb on Reach wouldn't there have been pretty much the lose of any remaining UNSC forces including any remaining Spartans and Doctor Halsey.

Assuming that it did take anything with it, there would still be a considerable amount of forces on their way to Earth to pretty much shatter the defenses instead of pummel them.
