During the cutscene when Jorge jumps out of the Sabre, It shows the covenant Bombarding the surface of Reach. What is so significant about that to me is that is how I thought Glassing looked while reading the Halo books, yet in Halo 3 and actual gameplay of Reach, they show Glassing as a sort of laser beam.

I had originally thought the "laser beam" was a more direct, and or accurate version of Glassing.

So I am confused as to which is actually Glassing.

Can anyone help?

Why couldn't they have just been bombing? No canon said they didn't bomb reach before they glassed it.

Absolutely true, However, the shock-waves produced by them stretched out as far as the hurricane next to it.

IDK, it just seems too powerful not to be glassing.

Probably Anti-Matter bombs the Covies placed at SMAC generators.

Speaking of Which, is there any explanation, of how generators on a planet can power something in space?

Remote power transfer. It's either a real technology that's being researched or I read something about its applications in the Halo universe, perhaps both. It's not one of the most far-fetched parts of the Halo lore.

Plasma torpedoes perhaps. I bet the covenant used them for glassing too.

Yeah, I remember hearing about that IRL but if the UNSC are using it for SMACS, it would seem useful for other things as well.

It hurts to think about it lol.

About the Plasma Torpedoes. It can't be as the Covie Corvette in ONI: Swordbase
is using them to bomb the airfield and base there.

I agree, and actually like it more than the silly beam thingy But I'd say they're both glassing.

You can beam power with microwaves, I'm pretty sure there's companies working on it now. Here in California one of our utilities is seeking approval for Space Based Solar, and I believe Japan is also moving forward. The technology has been demonstrated 'horizontally' on the ground IIRC.

There's still some inefficiency, so it's possible that pumping enough energy through the atmosphere that way would bad side effects. For example, using the .5 C number for SMACs, at 99% efficiency 20 of them would dump around 200 gigatons of energy per second into the atmosphere.

The corvette was firing "mini" plasma torpedoes. Perhaps the Long Night of Solace was firing its full-size plasma torpedoes (they were said to be able to track their targets, so hitting Sword Base from orbit should be easy).

Yet even in space they didn't track, nor did they even destroy a Sabre in one hit even on Legendary

As I was saying, the corvette's "mini" torpedoes were weaker and likely did not have the ability to track. The supercarrier's, however, did.

There`s two types of glassing, Orbital Bombardment and Low range Bombardment. Orbital bombardment is the type you saw in Long Night of Solace, and Low range Bombardment is the laser beam type which is used groundside like in New Alexandria. Your Welcome :)
