You can make something as radar invisible as you like, thermal emissions cannot be hidden, unless you aren't moving and have your life support fully shut down.

Actually it is already being done with metamaterials.
You did read the article, didn't you? The thermal emissions of the engines of starships can be seen from across solar systems, and the docking thrusters of today's space shuttle can be seen from the Asteroid Belt. Because there is an epic difference between the -270 degrees C of space, and the several hundred (if not thousands) + degrees C of the thrusters.

"Even a ship using ion drives and thrusting at a measly 1/1000G would be seen from a distance equivalent to that of Earth to the Sun."

I don't think Grafton could have even reacted fast enough. Didn't the supercarrier teleport there via the Spire, and within ten seconds of doing so proceed to obliterate Grafton from above?

The captain of Grafton would have had to be either very lucky or psychic to scan for thermal signatures at the exact right moment and then deploy nukes at the carrier above in an impossibly short amount of time.

Plus, nukes would have harmed the planet and possibly killed off a lot of friendlies, anyway.

The spires teleported troops from the Carrier to the surface, it was there, just cloaked with Active Camo engaged.

If that's the case, why wouldn't it have destroyed Grafton before it took out the Spire?

We are determined that before the sun sets on this terrible struggle our flag will be recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom on the one hand and of overwhelming force on the other.

I would have used SPARTAN Teams Noble, Gauntlet, Echo, and Beta Red, plus that Platoon of SPARTAN IIs to de-shield the Spires, and have the Frigates Grafton and Saratoga to fire a few salvos of Archer Missile Pods at them to disable them.

At this point, Covenant Supercarrier - Long Night of Solace, wouild have been detected, I would have Grafton & Saratoga retreat and send out Pelicans and Falcons to pick our troops up.

By then, the Long Night of Solace would have pulled back into geo-synchrinous orbit over Reach, and was comprimised. Once the troops were back on the Frigates, I would send the Grafton up to help with Operation - UPPERCUT, and the Frigate Saratoga to reinforce the besieged ONI: Sword Base. Once at Anchor 9, I would have the Grafton use its 50mm PDFs to help the Sabre Teams mop up the Covenant Recon flights. Then, I would proceed with the operation. When at the Ardent Prayer, the Covenant Corvette, I would have the Savannah and Grafton use their 50mm PDF to knock out the Plasma Torpedo launchers on the Corvette, and Have the Platoon of SPARTAN IIs and aPlatoon of UNSC Army soldiers, to help the taking of the Cpmmunication Room, Hanger Bay, and Bridge. If the slipspace bomb were to fail, I would leave 3 Army Soldiers behind, and evac the SPARTAN IIs along with the remaining soldiers. I would call the Frigate Savannah and Grafton back to Anchor 9, refit-and-repair, and send them down to Reach to reinforce the troops fighting in New Alexandria, they would deploy Noble, and Echo to clear Traxus Tower and assist in the evacuation there, and bring the missile defense system back online at the plaza area to assist in Civilian evacs. Beta-Red and Gauntlet would eliminate the Jammers in New Alexandira while the UNSC Saratoga arrive over the city, the Now 3 Ship Strike Force made up of the Saratoga, Grafton, and Savannah, would eliminate the 3 Corvettes over the city using MACs and continue assitstance in the Evactuation of civilians from Newe Alexandria.

I would then use any remaining free orbital support to aid in the destruction of the 2 CCS Class Battlecruisers that would later arrive.

Finnaly, I would dispatch the Grafton and Savannah to assist in the Battle over Reach, and would send the UNSC Saratoga to recieve the Package, and deliver it to the Pillar of Autumn, I would put SPARTAN Teams Noble, Gauntlet, Echo, Beta-Red and the Platoon of SPARTAN IIs on the Pillar of Autumn and cover it while it flees Reach.

Feel free to point out flaws in my battleplan.

Not sure, that section isn't well narrated beyond 'Z0MG COVIE SHIP! BLOW IT UP!'

Wait... are you telling me the story and details of Halo Reach don't make any sense? I am shocked. Shocked I tell you.

I still don't buy the Supercarrier stealth cloak. Reach was a military planet, and it somehow sneaked in. I also agree with other commenters, the Supercarrier (being that close) could have utterly annihilated the Reach defenses and critical facilities and yet sent in dropships and infantry.

Shocked I tell you.

My longlong post on Page 1 is a list of examples of the UNSC being catastrophically thick during Reach.

You don't understand how metamaterials work do you? It would use the -270 degree space and make it go around the engines to the thermal viewer, thus rendering it completely invisible. Plus the LNoS was in atmosphere making it even easier.

<3 Auntie Dot

To Be Honest, it´s hard to Believe a 27 Km Ship would go unnoticed Orbiting or in the Atmosphere of the most heavily protected stronghold the UNSC had (second to Earth ofc).

Yeah, have you ever noticed all that fire that builds up around a ship from friction as it enters the atmosphere? Well this ship is 27km long....

Link to that specific use? The wiki on it doesn't exactly make for easy reading.

They send in Spartan IIIs to do jobs that would-be impossible to normal troops. If they just sent in falcons and pelicans then they might complete their mission but it wouldn't give the morale boost of seeing or hearing about a Spartan.

It would certainly hide it from view - how it would actively redirect infra-red from the massive heat of the engines, and their warming effect on nearby space, is beyond me, and I'm not sure if that's feasible.

How did LNoS get in system? shouldn't we have detected the Cherenkov radiation? How did it cloak so fast as to not be seen?

For all we can assume, it slipped in while another ship was jamming us. We really don't know. But I really think we were being jammed by Covenant Ships of a smaller-class.

Good strategy, but you are forgetting the 314 ships that arrive after the LNoS is destroyed.

I'm not sure about the details, and this is all hypothetical. Perhaps they contain it until they reach the atmosphere then slowly disperse it, or maybe they use the heat to create more energy.

Well who wouldn't do a thermal scan or at least get some intel before running in on the covenant.
