I play games for gameplay, not silly gimmicks
H3 MM warrior
Reach S7, 8 and 9 arena warrior.
H4 MM legend
Alright here we go:
Weapons- Reach definatly has more weapons in its sandbox if you include vehicles (which I do) but does that make them better? IMO the weapons in Reach all feel unnecessary, with exception to rockets/sniper. Never before have you been able to have such complete control with one weapon. Even as versatile as the BR was in H3 it was easily countered close and far ranges. In Reach it seems that nothing is a counter to anything because the power weapons, which now have drop times, can be so easily controled. Also without power weapons it seems as if the kill times for everything else is rediculous, especially with the addition of bloom, which in my eyes has no place in a fast paced FPS.
Maps- One of the biggest differences in Reach as its predecessors is the map balancing. The maps in this game are far far worse than in previous installments. Look at reflection, paradiso, cage, pinnacle. What happened bungie, the past few games had amazing symmetrical maps which encouraged fair and fun play. In this game you can actually determine who will win based on what team you are with almost 100% accuarcy.
Campaign- Though I have not finished it, I will say that it is more entertaining so far. I am not usually one for the storys for a FPS so this is much harder for me to accuratly judge.
Sound- I put this in for the sake of completition for the comparison. Honestly music isnt a make or break in halo games but I will say I enjoyed what I heard in H3 more so than the other games.
Gameplay- This may take awhile. To begin lets go with how AAs/bloom make thier debut. As I have mentioned earlier I dont believe that bloom should be in a fast paced FPS. It slows down the game and rewards spamming, as well as lowers the skill gap a considerable amount. It also adds an unnecessary layer of randomness which again should not exist in a FPS. AAs also add another layer of randomness which should not exist. Again they add to the already slow kill times and make the game slower than it should be. The game seems to flow slowly and teamwork is nowhere near as encouraged due to a flawed system which will be disscused in the next segment. The physics are also off as compared to H3. Grenades are now power weapons capable of killing someone so easily that you may as well put down your gun. The fluidity of the maps further conribute to slow games, and imo slow down the game even more so than bloom+AA combined. Overall the gameplay in Reach is far slower and more sluggish.
Ranking system- Wether you are a new player or seasoned veteran you cannot say that the current ranking system is good. Note that I am not refering to the cR or xp system but the divisional system. You litteraly have to compete against your own team to achieve a higher division, which is fine for a LW playlist but if you play as a team you should be ranked as such. If you go in alone then it makes sense to be individually ranked, but if you search as a team then that should be taken into account. Also the reset system makes the game far more repetitive, I know that this is how bungie planned to stop second accounts, but by doing that you are making the game suffer. If people are going to make second accounts let them, trying to stop them is like banning alchole, it wont stop them just piss em off. Besides getting onyx or gold every season is boring, and unfair to lesser players. Basically instead of stopping second accounts you just give everyone a new account every month. The player who were complaining about second accounts are still going to get thrashed by the same players every month.
Xp system- I like how they did it this time around, though I think 20,000,000 cR is a bit much. At anyrate either system works fine for me, in this case I would call it a draw.
Overall enjoyment- I think that Reach has potential to be great, but it is marred by so many stupid and otherwise unnecessary flaws. H3 was by no means perfect but to me it is far more playable and enjoyable. It seems that Bungie tried to cater to a more social experiance, which I have no problem with, but they should have made something that us more hardcore fans could play with a viable satisfaction.
H3 or Reach- Believe it or not I want to say Reach is better but I cant. I want to be able to move on to future games but Reach just doesnt feel like a step forward. As of now H3>Reach, this can change but there is alot that would have to change to allow for this.
Ending note- I know I didnt do a whole lot of H3 explaining like I did for Reach, but its been out for 3 years and im sure you all know how it works. If you want I will go back and edit this later to include more, but for now you should know how I feel about Reach
