**SPOILERS**

Was the reason he died because he couldn't see? He paused before he shot the Elite. And he didn't notice the ship at all.

He took out multiple Phantoms on the Mass Driver, yet you think he had to pause and look for the Elite he had right in front of his shotgun barrel?

"Time... Line??? Time is not made out of lines! It is made out of circles... That is why clocks are round!" - Micheal J. Caboose

Yeah, no way.

I don't remember the details exactly, but in one of the Halo novels they describe the helmets and how they work. I can't remember the description, but it gave me the impression that they aren't actually looking through the visor exactly. I don't really understand what I'm saying, maybe someone else could clarify, but it was as if the inside of the visor was more of a view screen with the images from outside the helmet being shown.

This is the only explanation I can come up with as to why Emile can scratch the ever loving -blam!- out of his helmet and still see.

The scrathes are just removed golden paint. It doesn't prevent him from seeing, in fact it can only make it easier for him to see. But he's not fit for spacewalks because the sun would blind him.

What a waste....

Funny thing is, he's wearing an EVA helmet.

Emile does have a disadvantage. Two in fact. He's a loudmouth and he thinks his shotgun works at sniping range.

It's called HUD, Heads Up Display, as in HEADS UP. Emile just wasn't paying attention. And yea, if you look threw an EVA helm, you see what you would in an EOD helm. The visor is huge, it's like a giant camera, but covered in some places. That's why you can see the outline of your "outside visor".

I knew I wasn't totally crazy. Also, I never said he couldn't see or anything, just to clarify.

i remember reading this as well, i think the general idea is the visor is only really there in case the system fails, and to give fellow soldiers something to look at to make them more at ease.

as i recall, all helmets have a heads up display each exactly the same. for example, looking into a scout helmet's visor would look the same as an eva visor. thats from the wearer's POV

proof that your not literaly seeing through your visor (unless system failure)is Gungnir.

  • 11.30.2010 2:29 AM PDT

I think you do look through the visor, otherwise different shapes and reflective material is pointless.
The HUD may be the same, but shown slightly differently due to visor shape. In game appearance is partly going to be gameplay reasons. Your TV is always going to be square.
EVA, for example, has a large visor so the wearer has a wide FOV without moving their head, because doing so in zero-g could be problematic. If it was simply a projected internal 'screen', then all the shapes are pointless.
GUNGNIR specifically does have an internal screen, and a small camera outside to show the wearer. It was designed with the Spartan Laser in mind, which makes sense considering aiming/firing requires it to be right next to your head, and the visor is never going to be as strong as armour.

Besides that, if all helmets were just 'a screen' inside, then that pretty much renders the enhanced Spartan eyesight pointless. A camera is never going to give as clear an image as your own eyes, so making all Spartans use screens when they don't have to is counter-productive.

Screen inside a Visor? Isn't that what a GUNGNIR helmet basically is? I always figured every helmet was like that but had a visor as a backup
